James Paxton plans to retire after this season.

James Paxton still is holding out hope that he can recover from injury and pitch for the Boston Red Sox this season.

But if he doesn't, the veteran left-hander said he plans to retire once the season ends.

"I'm hoping that we can squeak into the postseason and I can get the opportunity to pitch again," the veteran left-hander said on the "Baseball Isn't Boring" podcast with host Rob Bradford on Wednesday. "But I think after this season [I'm] going to be retiring and moving on to the next chapter.

  1. I’ve heard rumors he plans to do stuff with baseball after retirement. Perhaps he wants to be the next Craig Breslow.

  2. Must be s frustrating career,11 years in the bigs, only 951 innings pitched, never started more than 29 games or pitched more than 160 innings in a season. When he actually WAS healthy though, really good, certainly above average lefty,73-41 record,3.77 e.r.a,3.60 FIP,9.5 K’s/9 innings. If he had been healthy his whole career he would’ve put up some excellent numbers, wins,K’s,etc.

Still, he’s made a little less than 55 million in his career to date, even though he was never healthy enough to sign a generational wealth contract, he’s still set for the rest of his life, assuming he took home roughly 30 million after taxes and agent fees. The Paxton family won’t be on welfare anytime soon.
