No way was it close- his wife vetoed that.
I remember before the free agency started. Kneubeck mentioned that he was confident that Batum would come back, but it would take more than vet min.
I think their original plan was to offer him significantly more than vet min, but when the free agency started, they realized both PG and Caleb Martin were a real possibility. So, they pivot and only had vet min left for him. So, he took more money and signed with clippers
Morey looking at Batum with the KJM contract the way Thibs looks at Derrick Rose’s knees
