I don’t know that Bure counts as a “steal.” There were extenuating circumstances there with concerns he wouldn’t be able to come to North America to play, IIRC.
Considering who went before him, I think Hughes was a steal.

Other than Bure, I’d say Kevin Bieksa in 5th round
Honourable mentions: Edler at 91 and Smyl at 40
Bure hands down.
Bure is the answer and it isnt even close. The better question is – who would be second? That is a lot more of a discussion. I dont even know. Most of our best in house drafted players were fairly high that worked out. Not a ton a big steals. Bieksa was a 5th… Had a few that panned out for other teams.
Jannik Hansen 565gp – 105g – 130a – 235pts from a 9th round pick.
Jannik Hansen. Drafted 287th in 2004 (5th to last pick in a 9 round draft!), finished 22nd in career points. Doesn’t get a bigger jump than this!

Of recent picks I’d say Demko
Bure is the answer, but the way we got the Sedins was more of a stickup type steal where Burke hijacked the draft to go home with the twins

Bure. Canucks committed grand larceny by drafting him when everyone else thought he was ineligible
There is a solid argument to be made about drafting both sedins. They are by far the best two from that draft class, and we got them both.
