Spencer Steer was set up to be the Cincinnati Reds consistent force in their lineup.

Steer was supposed to be the glue that held the Reds lineup together. Steer has not lived up to that billing though. He has taken a big step back from where he was last year and where projections thought he’d be for the Reds this year.

Steer is a complimentary player not the big bat they actually need
Will Benson and Candelario were WORSE. Spencer Steer, honestly, I'm not concerned. Disappointed? Yes, a little. But this team has the worst BA in MLB most of the season.
Martinez is 33. Rework his contract at 3 additional years for $45M and then take Abbot and dangle him for a young controllable bat. Rotation becomes Greene, Lodolo, Lowder, Martinez, and Williamson with Aguiar and Ashcraft as the backup starters/long relief. They should still have enough $$ to go out and sign one FA OF such as Hernandez.
I think Steer has been disappointing and unlucky. Thanks for advanced stats to get a more clear picture of what is going on. I have seen tons of his hard hits go right at a fielder this year. The other day the broadcasters were showing how Steer’s hard hit rate has actually improved every year. I think last year his hard hit rate was like 35-36% and this year it sits around 39-40%. Not sure the numbers that go into that…but seeing his low BABIP and seeing an improved hard hit rate makes me believe we will see a better steer next year. He is still a big run producer knocking on the door of 100 RBI’s and I am pleased with his 25 SB’s. He hasn’t had any protection in the lineup either so that plays a factor as well. While a disappointing season for sure, I think steer will continue to be the ‘mash potatoes’ of the team and I look forward to see him in the lineup next year.
