He’s superb but this trend of teams vastly over paying and terming very good young assets is getting tiresome
Key being assets
Power, Seider, Raymond, Guenther, etc.
None are close to all star level
Guenther is 67% WAR rn almost entirely reliant on finishing, Seider 30% and tough deployment doesn’t drop it that much
Even if one thinks they’re going to become 7-8 mil players, which ok sure, they can just bridge currently
These teams are all trying to make the playoffs so cap space is vital
They almost certainly won’t become 10+ M players as they’re not teenagers now and for instance Kucherov and Pastrnak had much much higher WAR in their early seasons, so it’s not a bargain
It’s just bad mgmt ultimately
Especially when it’s partly kevyn Adams and yzerman trying to keep their jobs
Bleh.
7mil and he played 45 games last year. 78 games over 2 seasons. Could be a steal, could be the next Josh Norris. I think teams are trying so hard to avoid paying players 10mil they are just skipping the bridge contracts and gambling that they overperform the 7-8mil contracts instead. This is why I am more and more in favor of dropping the max contract length. Some of these GMs need to be saved from themselves. Time will tell though.
