[Locked on Cubs] What if the Chicago Cubs replace Jed Hoyer with Craig Counsell?
September 20, 2024
Thought this was an interesting hypothetical from Locked on Cubs podcast regarding our current situation. What other Cub fans think.

I think Craig would be much more aggressive than Jed ever would be and not be scared to actually fucking spend for talent.
Not a good idea

How you could watch this season in which the Cubs are going to finish with the exact same record as they did with Ross and the Brewers torched this division and still think Counsell is some kind of savant rather than a decent middle management type is beyond me.
The Ricketts would still operate like a small market team so it makes no difference.
Jed needs to be replaced by an established GM
Nah. Lets give it to r/chicubs. We’d build a winner in a year.
I recently saw that the Giants GM said if you try to spend rationally on players in free agency you’ll usually have the third place bid.
The Cubs need someone who’s willing to gamble.
Does CC have an MBA? Can he count beans?
Going to be a long off season
Not a terrible idea provided CC has the support staff guys he knows and likes.
I’m guessing CC would actually ask for what we need and Tom would say no. So, probably not the best idea with this ownership at least. CC does sound pissed at where they’re at, so that message has been sent. Its up to Jed and Tom to give a shit this offseason. Should be very telling about the future.
Also, obviously not really a manager problem. Bringing in CC and ignoring the roster issues was a very dumb move, tbh.
I believe Counsell spent time in the Brewers front office before becoming their manager. He knows how his former team runs their organization from a coaching, drafting, scouting and development perspective. His recent comments might be a way of telling Jed out loud the Cubs should be able to do just as well or better than a small market team with all the money and resources they have available. After getting to know his players throughout the year, I think Counsell will have more input this offseason on the makeup of the roster and perhaps other areas of the organization
LockedOn Cubs sucks. This is a ridiculous hypothetical.
GM + Manager
I don’t want him focusing on phone calls from GMs and agents when he should be focusing on winning as many of the 162 + playoff games as he can. Rarely does the coach/GM work.
What has Jed ever done (please spare me that he had any responsibility for 2016 other than an office in the building).
