It's been 13 years since we last saw Brandon Roy suit up for the Portland Trail Blazers and yet the team has yet to retire it even though no player has worn that number out of respect. Yes, Carmelo wanted that #7, and of course, he decided to go #00 instead.
Roy only lasted for 5 seasons with the Blazers, and it was really unfortunate to see his career end prematurely, but one thing people need to understand is that this guy revitalized the franchise's image that was tarnished by the infamous Jail Blazers era. I know most newer Blazer fans might say, "Dame revived the franchise's image," but the truth is it was B-Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge are the ones who started that process.

We are retire number happy in Portland. Roy was amazing. But no.
Roy was good for four seasons, made it to the playoffs twice and never got past the first round. Let’s not be that desperate just because of what could’ve been.
I wouldn’t retire Aldridge’s number, and he was objectively more successful.
Bit of perspective (not a perfect measurement mind you) but comparing Roy’s career stats with 2024 NBA stat lines, he fits in somewhere around what White (Chicago) and Williams (OKC) achieved in the high 40s of ranking by PPG with similar assists and rebounds.
I personally don’t know who either White or Williams are.
I think the #7 can probably stay available at this stage.
NO, he shouldn’t get his number retired, and we should’ve just given his number to Carmelo. Pretty crazy we’ve waited this long, at this point it’ll probably get retired.
To some extent I do agree but unfortunately it was only 5 years and no chips.
Part of becoming a great is longevity, unfortunately Roy’s knees weren’t built for a long career. I don’t think it was enough to earn his jersey in the rafters. Especially after signing in Minnesota which forced Portland to use their amnesty on him
Roy’s number should be retired because if not for him we’d still be the Jailblazers. He brought back the passion to rip city!
We don’t retire numbers based on hypotheticals.

I love Roy but I don’t think he’s in the category of “jersey retirement guy”
Maybe I’m crazy. He would have been if he’d been healthy. But this would be a goofy jersey retirement.

I love B-Roy and what happened to him was sad as hell but he never won a playoff series in Portland.
Retiring someone’s number should mean something beyond “he was a fan favorite”

As I understand it, #7 is already privately off-limits. When Melo came here, he inquired and was politely declined.
I think this de facto retirement is fine for now. I would really love to see it in the rafters, but I get why people are iffy: he didn’t do much on the court.
I would counter that no Roy means Portland probably loses the Blazers in 2007.
