[Cronin] Matt Eberflus on Caleb Williams’ interception on a throw intended for Rome Odunze: “I think it was an aggressive throw, I really do. I think he was open but again those windows close in the NFL… He’s gotta have some wisdom there and discernment in terms of when he needs to make that throw.”

For the thousandth time, this is another example of Eberflus being a fraud and hurting the development of this young man. Ever wonder why Williams is suddenly launching deep balls 10 yards beyond the receiver? It’s the same reason that Fields avoided the MoF last year but now is hitting them with the Steelers.

Emphasizing 2-0-0 bullshit is not how you develop a player. Everyone knows that when your mental model is “Don’t screw up” you are more likely to make mistakes. The hope is that Williams is way to cocky to buy into this nonsense but this is reason 1000 that Flus should never have been here this year.

  1. Another data point for the “keeping Eberflus was a stupid fucking move Poles what the fuck were you thinking” argument

  2. Always publicly shame your rookie QB for trying to make a play for an offense that would have been shut out without said QB. Not sure which HITS category this falls into.

  3. I think calling a time out when it should have been obvious the entire drive that you were going for two was an aggressive move, I really do. I think he thought his brain was open but again those windows close in the NFL… He’s gotta have some wisdom there and discernment in terms of when he needs to be a competent fucking head coach.

  4. I dont think you can really put that interception on anyone. It was a really good play by the corner back and even better by the safety.

  5. Flus is so big on his ‘turnover differential’ that hes willing to neuter his young QBs.

This will be Poles’ biggest L.

  6. IF anything Caleb needs to learn how to balance small ball and aggression based on situation. There are plenty of examples where Caleb is throwing like he has to be aggressive when the game situation doesn’t call for it. The vast majority of Fields throws as a Steeler are low risk check downs. So using him as a counter example is hard to understand.

  7. I was in the camp of giving Eberflus one more year with a team that actually has the horses to compete this year but after this statement I’d fire him on the spot. This sentence is the exact reason why fans and media say you can’t have a defensive minded head coach while trying to develop a young quarterback. It’s this type of nonsense that’s stunts the growth of young quarterbacks and makes them start to second guess themselves

  8. Caleb is a heisman trophy winning quarterback that’s agressive with the football and you’re asking him not to throw it because of tight windows in the NFL. You finally have a dog at quarterback but you want him to be a little puppy chihuahua and make the safe throw GTFOH he was the number one pick for a reason.

  9. If you coach that aggressiveness out of him, then he’s just another guy at QB.

One of many reasons why Eberflus sucks and should’ve already been fired, but the organization is too incompetent and lacks the balls to make that move at the right time.

  10. The glaring thing is that Caleb made a perfect throw and hit Rome in his hands. Defensive coaches are always going to be worried about being aggressive.

  11. There was nothing wrong with that throw. It was questionably pass interference and it hit Rome in the hands. He should be thrilled his rookie can hit those windows and mad that Rome popped it up or that the refs held their whistle

  12. As much as I hate Flus, if you read the whole quote (OP cut A LOT of it out) it comes across a bit differently than the way it’s being presented in this post. Flus basically says Rome was open, but that Caleb was late getting to that throw. And that the INT happened because he was late, so Flus says by the time Caleb saw Rome he would have been better off checking it down because ball security is job #1 for a QB.

I get all the comments saying that coaching the aggressiveness out of Caleb completely is a bad idea, but nothing Flus said is incorrect

  13. Watched this play on JT’s breakdown.

He did force it into double coverage but the throw was on the money. It was kinda a ‘shit happens’ play, the safety caught a deflected pass with one hand while falling out of bounds… sometimes a guy just makes a play.

JT also threw some shade at Moore for letting up on his go-route and letting the safety close. “If he was running hard the safety would been a step late”

  14. I think calling 2 timeouts and leaving your team dry late in the game is aggressive

I think calling a timeout with 35 seconds on the play clock just to decide, against everyone on the sideline, to go for 2 is aggressive.

I think going for a speed option play on the 1 yard line is an aggressive play.

I think wasting another time out for no apparent reason is aggressive.

I think for 2 weeks in a row wasting a total of 4 time outs in the second half on wasted plays and non clock control is aggressive

  15. The only possible explanation for this making sense is if he’s confused and actually talking about the other interception where, in fact, the throw was late and the window closed.

  16. Thats what? 2 weeks in a row of publicly shaming our rookie QB? C’mon man. Where’s your accountability on wasting our timeouts in 2 straight games? AND being lost in the sauce on whether or not we should go for 2. Dude is clueless.

  17. I haven’t seen anyone mention that Rome was being interfered with on the play. [Video](https://x.com/SconnieColt/status/1838182846277570915) the DB’s left arm prevents Rome from getting his left arm high enough to squeeze the ball. The DB gets his head around and we’re on the road, so I don’t expect to get this call, but that is pass interference by the rulebook. With that and the randomness of a deflection bounce, this turnover was due to bad luck, not bad decision making.

  18. I really like what our 11-26 record as a head coach has to say here. He does a great job of pointing out that our “extremely potent” offense shouldn’t take chances so our defense can try and get turnovers and score the ball and win games every week like we did against the titans. Can’t wait to go fucking 5-12 this year because our head coach should be a defensive coordinator and has absolutely no business being a HC.

  19. It was a great pass. Hit Rome right in the hands. Rome should have caught it, but I’m just an armchair analyst. Not Caleb’s fault imo.

  20. Damn, one of the biggest highlights in my opinion of Caleb has been, he’s clearly not afraid to trust his arm. He goes for the tight windows, that was a giant issue I had with Fields where even in his last game as a bear where he had nothing to lose, he still was super conservative throwing the ball.

I was really happy a rookie QB wasn’t being affected by bad throws and interceptions to stop trusting his arm, but now the head coach is publicly shaming him for doing that, really hope Caleb just watched that slide off his back and continues to do what he’s doing.

  21. Eberlose hasn’t proven anything beyond being a fairly likable guy who’s a pretty good D co-ordinator…Competent head coach? Haven’t seen it yet

  22. Bro really thinks its a bad play that should be discouraged when he hit his wide Receiver 25+ yards down field in the face.

This whole staff really thinks they can out smart their opponents rather than just out play them.

AGAIN.We have that Shit AGAIN. Its suddenly clear to me that we have that shit again because that is what Matt Eberflus believes on offense.

    We are cooked.

  23. I can’t believe they kept this guy. You can tell in hard knock that Caleb doesn’t respect him. Hopefully he doesn’t listen to him either
