[Santelli] Two facts, take them for what you will: 1. Ethan reports that the Pirates would owe Rowdy a $200,000 bonus if he reaches 425 plate appearances. 2. Rowdy has 421 plate appearances.

  1. Pirates: “I can’t believe the hammy is acting up again, let’s do a 10-day to make sure you’re fresh”

  2. Not that the Pirates are known for signing good free agents, but this sure seems like a great way to make sure good free agents never want to play for your team

  3. So if someone claimed him and gave him 4 PAs quick before the end of the season, would the team that claimed him have to pay the full $200k bonus or the Pirates? or would it be prorated between the two teams?

EDIT: I did find this in the CBA agreement

“(ii) The responsibility for any and all performance bonuses
earned after the assignment shall be prorated between the
assignor and assignee Clubs in proportion to the total number of
relevant events attained during the season with each Club
    involved;”

So I do believe it would be prorated assuming this includes DFAed players

  4. Gotta love it when ownership is clearly okay with risking future free agent signings to pinch pennies.

  5. I get he hasn’t earned any more playing time based on performance but this seems like a pretty bad look for any potential future FA signings

  6. It’s just Business. He has a ops+ of 91. surprised they didn’t cut him earlier. Hate the pirates all you want but the 29 other teams would of done the same.

  7. Lost in the midst of Pirates-bashing is the fact that Tellez has wRC+ 89 and -0.5 fwar / -0.3 bwar.

And that Michael A. Taylor with 0.4 fwar / 0.9 bwar (who presumably does not have upcoming incentive milestone) was released along with him.

Among the 16 Pirates hitters with 100+ PAs this season, Tellez ranks 12th by fwar and two players with less fwar are in AAA.

At this point, Tellez is a below average MLB hitter with below average 1B defense and abysmal baserunning.

The real issue is that Pirates gave him 400+ PAs, not that they did not allow him to reach a 425 PA threshold.

  8. On a human level it’s a bush league move by the organization.

But everyone who’s played OOTP completely understands.

  9. ITT: a bunch of people who apparently don’t know how baseball works. The guy was shit this year. As a GM, you’d be a complete fool to let him get those last 4 plate appearances with how he’s played. He didn’t earn that bonus in the slightest

  10. I missed that he es DFA’d before reading this post. I was like, “Cool, he’ll that mark this week.”

  11. People keep saying this is going to prevent free agents from wanting to sign there but that’s the active goal of this ownership group, this is an absolute win for them

Save 200k and prevent those pesky FAs that expect non rookie contracts paid to them

  12. Imagine being a billionaire with one of the lowest payrolls in MLB and you DFA a guy to save 200k, fucking disgusting

  13. I mean, he’s a negative WAR player this year, but he’s played in 131 games (3rd) with 13 home runs (4th) and 56 RBI (3rd) and there’s 6 games left

That’s as transparent as you can get

  14. Tellez tried to stiff his former landlord in Toronto on his way out, didn’t he? Maybe this is just a bit of karma.

  15. To be fair to the Pirates, would You want to pay an extra $200k to a player with a – 0.5 fwar?

  16. Fuck this garbage ass organization and every single person in management. Especially Bob Nutting. 28th losing season out of the last 32 years! Wooooo!

  17. Pirates trending up, stud rookie pitcher, another young flamethrower, more in the minors, Oneil Cruz looks good. Hey here’s an idea! Let’s DFA a guy over a 200k bonus! Everyone will love that!
