Danil Gushchin And Luca Cagnoni Push For Jobs As The San Jose Sharks Win 3-2 Over Ducks

Without Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith, the San Jose Sharks came from behind to win 3-2 in overtime versus the Anaheim Ducks, largely due to the efforts of Luca Cagnoni and Danil Gushchin. Has either player won an NHL job? Start with Cagnoni and why the AHL still makes sense for him to start, but he should earn NHL time this season. Then, Danil Gushchin continues to produce every time he is in the lineup. Has he claimed an NHL job out of camp? Also, discuss why Quentin Musty might be heading back to the OHL, Kasper Halttunen’s night, and Jake Furlong makes an impression. Finally, get caught up on the Aaron Dell re-signing and why Georgi Romanov is primed to have a massive season for the San Jose Barracuda.

  1. Cagnoni and Romanov were great in that game. I think Cagnoni will get a few games at the end of the season and will be regular dman in the NHL next season. I think it will be similar like what the Ducks did with Zellweger. One thing I don't get is people getting excited from pre-season games wins. It is not the point of these games. I also doubt the Sharks will finish anywhere but 8th in the division, unless Flames will totally blow up.

The most impressive guy from that game was Cutter Gauthier though. The guy is really good, 12 shots in a game, holy shit. It also helped Romanov though. For me, he is the biggest favourite to win the Calder. Although I would love to see Celebrini win, Gauthier will be better this year, cause he will play with better teammates, which will help him significantly. Now, I understand, why so many scouts are so high on him and why they think he will win the Calder. I think the thing that could potentially stand between him and Calder is that the Ducks are small franchise, so if he is in the final three with Michkov and Hutson for example, I could see them vote for one of those guys.

Anyway, that game was total Ducks dominance and Romanov and Cagnoni won this game, which is the great thing and the only thing people should pay attention to. Not the wins or standings.

  2. Just an FYI, but the Ducks were just streaming their Jumbotron feed last night. It wasn’t a traditional broadcast. That is why you saw replays during play, and tons of fan shots during whistles.

  3. Musty (big fan) needs to work on first 2 steps, clear off the cement blocks, cobwebs and tripwires… he looks a step behind. He needs to work on explosiveness and balance / center of gravity in the gym. Cagnoni at 5'9" was hitting bigger guys and smearing them off the boards. I feel like the moment is "too bright" (wow ouch I'm so critical) at the moment. I skated for the first time in 5-years, and I was wiping out on spin-o-rama's or getting tripped easier. Ankle strength for balance, quads strength/deadlifts/leg press and play anticipation (hockey IQ) are a big thing for him for this entire year of progress. He's gotta know where to go, where the pucks going (like Gretzky said "go where the puck is going to be, not where it is")… and he's gotta get his endurance up so he can be a checking-style forward if he ends up cracking the Sharks as a 3rd-line winger, next year. All these modern guys skate like the wind, so if he ends up earning a few milliseconds in explosiveness/skating/IQ/anticipation this year… he'll be ready for the show!!!
