Spurs’ Devin Vassell to miss start of season

  1. Wow another foot surgery. I hope it helps and he’s ready to go by November, but missing Training Camp is tough especially considering we have 3 new rotation guys starting on the team.

  2. It’ll be interesting to see who takes advantage of this absence (obligatory “get well soon, Devin”). A few possibilities:

    * Keldon Johnson- Based on experience, perhaps the most likely candidate to join the starting lineup, and a chance to show he can play some 2-guard with his seemingly slimmed down body
    * Malaki Branham- Perhaps the next true 2-guard on deck. Minutes were going to get a little harder to come by for Malaki, so this might be a blessing in disguise for him.
    * Stephon Castle- Given that the Spurs have Chris Paul and Tre Jones, Castle was already going to get some minutes at the 2/3, rather than his preferred PG role. This only increases those minutes.
    * Probably some arguments to be made for Julian Champagnie, Sidy Cissoko, Blake Wesley, Harrison Ingram, Brandon Boston, and David Duke Jr., especially since some of those guys were going to have a hard time getting preseason minutes period.

  3. Sucks but we know what DV can bring, let someone else show what they can do, we can only benefit from this.

  4. Damn this really sucks. His exit interview from last season he mentioned health being a goal of his – I’m sure this is weighing on him. Get well soon!

  5. Crazy how long it takes to recover from surgery. He didn’t get a new surgery. This is a recovery from the surgery that he got at the end of last season.

  6. To me it just sounds like they’re being cautious with his recovery from his previous injury and surgery. The fact that it sounds like he’s expected back within the first couple of weeks. Believe them doing typical Spurs cautionary stuff which is honestly always for the best

This could work out in the end as long as Devin is healthy. I’ve been of the mindset that Castle has a much more difficult path to cracking the rotation than people seem to think.

The sudden there’s a very real opportunity for him to get starting minutes for the first couple of weeks and if he does well, transition directly into a high minute bench role
