  1. IMO Edmonton peaked last year and won't be able to get to the finals in their current state. McDavid and Draisaitl's contracts simply keep the team from getting the necessary depth to win a cup. Personally I think Vegas and Colorado in the west and NY Rangers and Panthers in the east are serious contenders for their individual divisions as cup winners. I think Montreal can pull an upset and go in the playoffs.

  2. Edmonton fan here, time in and time out our management is counting on a few question marks to fill roster spots. We still need at least two decent D, not to mention if injuries happen. We're pretty much counting on several players to overachieve. Which if they do damn this team will be nasty but that's not how the NHL works.

  3. Dallas fan here. This team is so well balanced in that there is a very strong veteran and youth mix still even after losing Joe. Otter and desmith play a very similar which bring much more predictability in the net. Dumba, Smith, and Blackwell bring a much more physical product which has been a desperate need the past few years. My only disagreement would be Boston not being contenders. I understand the goaltending questions but that team is so deep and is very well coached. I feel they should trade with the devils. But hey just a civil disagreement. I see the argument both ways.

  4. When they add Houston and Atlanta, those two teams will immediately become potential play off teams. Everybody below the the top ten, will move further away from the play offs. So rebuilding and retooling right now, becomes more important and needs to be done quicker, right now!

  5. Sabres fan here. Zero credit for Lindy being back behind the bench? Barring the worst injury luck of all 32 teams, Lindy Ruff will get the Sabres back into the playoffs for the first time since….he coached them into the playoffs in 2011.

  6. THG your final two teams is the exact two teams the NHL was pushing for this past Cup finals. The NHL wants viewers and hype. NYR have one of the largest and widest fan bases in the entire NHL. Away games can be as loud as games at MSG. One could claim something similar with the Habs in Canada. In the end it comes down to the markets. Would fans rather see Sunrise FL vs Edmonton or NY Rangers vs. Dallas Stars? Gary Bettman would choose the latter.

  7. I will admit im a little bias as flyers fan but i think its weird that the flyers are all the way down in rebuild(which we technically are) but yet we were in the same situation as the redwings and almost the Capital's flyers are at least an unknown!

  8. Ottawa 80-1-1 and a sweep through the finals. Yep, sounds about right. The one loss? A forfeit to the Ducks when the team bus waits for them at Disneyland but Giroux had convinced them all to go to Knott's Berry Farm.

  9. Dallas doesn't beat Edmonton. Sure both teams made some adjustments but come the deadline Edmonton will acquire the missing pieces going into the playoffs. I do appreciate you jinxing Dallas over the Oilers though 🙂

  10. We didn't have Demko for our entire playoff run and we took Edmonton to 7 without Boeser. Nucks are stacked this year – best in the west you will see. Edmonton has zero goaltending.

  11. I agree with a lot of that-but id only have 9 contenders,& drop Nashville,& NJ to playoff tier-but ahead of the rest,&.move Vegas back into contender status. WPG should make the playoffs but not be listed a contender-like ya did. My preseason prediction probably would be NYR beating Edmonton…Dallas loses another WCF,& TB gets back to ECF.

But only cuz my AVS are a such big question-probably not for making the playoffs-that should be a virtual lock. Although nobody is really a lock in the preseason in the NHL. But their floor should be pretty damn high. It's their ceiling that could be subject to a lot of variance. Besides young NHLers like Kovalenko,& Richie-any teams ceiling can raise greatly based on how impactful their "rookies" are.

But with Nichuskin,& Landyeskog we have as much potential ceiling variance as any contender. If the playoffs start,& neither is in our lineup for whatever reason(& out for the entire playoffs I mean)-I doubt we can win the West. But if 80-90% Landy(if hes 80-90% of his former caliber),& Nichuskin whole from addiction-show up to start the playoffs & everything else went as Id predict-Id have us winning the Cup over the Rangers.

But with the question marks I think having us #5 going in,& Dallas winning is totally fair. But Nichuskin,& Landyskog-when Lehkonen comes back-would give us potentially the most talented roster in the NHL…or at least the West-my opinion. I sure hope it comes together–'22 was an amazing AVS run,& '23 the Nuggets. But I'm still hoping for my 1st spring working at Ball arena where BOTH the AVS,& Nuggets can make at least WCF runs…maybe 2025 it'll happen.
