So, did he go on his own, or did he get the signal to go? Either way, him taking off there caught everyone completely off guard, including the catcher.

I’m too dumb.
I’m surprised more people don’t try to take third when you’re on second with two outs. Odds of scoring aren’t the best, and even getting thrown out gives the batter more looks at the pitcher to lead off next inning. If you get it, being on third dramatically drives up scoring percentage with two outs, or even better a poor, caught-off-guard throw from the catcher gives you a free run.
