[Gateway Grinders] Can we talk about how impressive it is for Ryan Helsley to lead the league and break a franchise record with 49 saves on an 82 win team? He didn’t allow a single earned run his last 17 games of the year. Your 2024 Cardinals MVP and it’s not close.

  1. I loved getting the feeling “game over” when he came in. So comforting to have such a reliable closer.

  2. Tbf a 500ish team probably does offer the most save opportunities. Any more and you’re probably winning by too big a margin and any less you aren’t leading in the 9th.

  3. Indeed, he is probably the main reason the Cardinals are a .500-ish team and not one closer to what its run differential indicates. (Along with Kittridge)

  4. A lot of those saves were in 1-run games. Ryan was great…but he also needs to thank that limp Cards offense that couldn’t put teams away.
