[Rogers] The Cubs are making several changes including letting go of first base coach Mike Napoli, hitting coach Jim Adduci, bullpen coach Darren Holmes and a couple of strength coaches, per sources.

  1. Scapegoats. But I get CC wanting his own guys likely. I personally thought Adduci did a fine job. They were all high praises last year

  2. Whatever department is in charge of keeping the guys healthy and off the IL (strength & conditioning?) …needs to be completely redone.

  3. The base coaches wouldn’t surprise me, did we end up having the most runners thrown out on the basepaths this year? I know we were leading for much of the season

  4. I don’t know how much of an impact 1st base coaches really make, but Napoli seemed fine. I hate his sunglasses though.

Kind of surprised Willie Harris didn’t get canned too.

  5. Counsell’s getting his staff. I don’t ever want to celebrate someone losing their job, but I am excited for him to hand pick a staff.

  6. Dustin Kelly and John Mallee remain as the main hitting coaches, but Jim Adduci was the guy in charge of game-planning, so this change makes sense from the eye test. I could be wrong though.

I don’t know if Darren Holmes was just a temporary replacement for Chris Young this year, but it’s worth wondering if his release is symbolic or if they felt he failed to prepare the bullpen guys to come into the game. I know what the popular opinion would be, but without any inside knowledge, I’ll avoid speculating.

Napoli has seemed out of it this entire year. Him nearly avoiding saying goodbye to Morel in the dugout appeared odd and disconnected.

  7. In the article about a big gap between us and the Brewers CC talked about MIL’s talent on and off the field. I took that to mean he didn’t see eye to eye with some of the coaching staff. I guess we know who now.

  8. It’s just so easy to fire a hitting coach rather than addressing the underlying issue which is offensive talent.   We have a couple of good players offensively.  We don’t have any star players.  The hitting coach could be awful.  He could be the best in the game.   We’re not ever going to know because the position is now essentially a scapegoat position.   What excuses will we make when we don’t pursue Juan Soto?  We’ll settle for someone like Pete Alonso at some overpaid price, and be annoyed when his offensive game ages poorly instead.

  9. I’ve always liked Napoli, but it seemed strange to me that the whole game yesterday, he was just chatting with the visitors dugout. Didn’t seem very focused. I noticed it for sure.

  10. I want to see Mark Grace in as the batting coach. Give me a lineup full of doubles machines batting .300+ every season.
