Locked On Braves POSTCAST: Offense stymied as Atlanta Braves drop Game 1 to San Diego Padres, 4-0

With Chris Sale unavailable, the Atlanta Braves were forced to chance their pitching plans for Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series, but it was their hitting which was once again unable to execute against Michael King and the San Diego Padres in a 4-0 loss at Petco Park on Tuesday.

Grant McAuley and Jake Mastroianni of Locked On Braves break down the series opening loss, the decision to start AJ Smith-Shawver, the performance of some unsung heroes in the Atlanta bullpen, the continued woes of the lineup to come through with runners in scoring position, and provided a preview of Game 2 with Max Fried on the mound against Joe Musgrove.

  1. Hi , Jake and Grant!
A miserable and disgusting display of a game by Atlanta. Nothing really unusual b/c we have seen this all year long.
A team cannot hope to win when you strike out 15 times. A the swing and misses were pitiful , d sad On my way! times swing at pitches that were feet off plate as opposed to inches. No plan of attack other than just swing and hope you hit the ball

  2. Ever since i heard chris sale wasn’t going to be able to pitch, I knew the only way they would’ve been able to win the series would be through a game 2 win with max fried . But I wasn’t expecting a no show for the offense, no exaggeration, but this was or is one of the worst offensive games I’ve seen this year. Lets see what the Braves approach at the plate will be tomorrow, but its not looking good🫣

  3. It would not have mattered who pitched . If you don’t score you will not win!! Let’s stop making excuses for this team because the issues is inability to get hits. And score !!

  4. I have to admit that as much as I have been frustrated with the Braves this year, I understand today. 5 games in four days. Monday was suppose to be a rest day. Overnight travel to San Diego. A pitcher who have not been in the rotation. San Diego did not win 12 – 0. Nor was it a no hitter lost. The Padres had trouble with good pitching. The Braves had more hits than Padres. Let's let tomorrow (the Braves on better rest) tell the tale. It only takes winning two games in a roll. Any team can do that. Fried and then Lopez. I do tell you that Soler seems to leaves runners on base. He gets two on bases all the time.

  5. Even with Max on the bum unless we generate some offense we willl lose . It’s that simple.
Makes me wonder why a team would even want to be in post season play if you can’t score runs. . Another poor showing by Braves.

  6. Several swings and misses were still pitches 2+ feet off the plate. What’s up with that?? These guys have played an entire season and they still don’t have any clue as to what a strike is , is a disgrace, they should have learned something . But apparently not.
Someone needs to develop an off season program designed to help players with pitch selection appropriate pitches at which to swing!
    I surely hope so,

  7. Pitching wasn’t terrible and they weren’t blown out but it is still so disappointing. I’m an Ian Anderson fan and wanted him to get the shot. They actually had more hits than Padres. Wasn’t Tatis suspended a few years back for cheating. Is it just me, or do you agree that the Padre fans were almost as obnoxious at the Philly fans? As sad as I am, I am confident Max and Reynaldo will give us a great chance to win two in a row. However, their history in elimination games is horrendous. 🤞

  8. Not ONE bunt attempt by ATL!🤬, just to get on base and stir things up. Most swings were at obvious balls away and unhitable. Home plate ump was fairly disastrous imo

  9. Without Sale, this should’ve been a bullpen game imo, with tested experienced arms, NOT a rookie who was not close to being prepared, as he was just informed the night before that he had to step up and start game 1 !😱awful decision by whoever made that call ☎️ to A.J. S-Sh’

  10. Jake, ur right again; my hope was Lee or Bummer to start. Experience trumps rookie especially in a high pressure game. Fateful decision on someone’s part 😢

  11. Braves Twitter full of Monday morning quarterbacks😂. 80% of these fools were asking for AJSS and then delete their tweet.

Bryce Elder was probably the best option of all the poor choices. At least we have SEEN him pitch well at the big league level this year. In addition, you don't see a lot of pitchers like him anymore with no the power/rely on movement. AJSS was a hope. Ian would have been my second choice.

Oh well, it doesn't matter if the offense is going to leave runners and scoring position like they did again tonight.

  12. What will cost the Bravss is simple offense. They swing for HR they refuse to steal bases sacrifice the runners over sac fly. Braves rely in the HR and if there not doing that. They look embarrassing at the plate

  13. King was terrific but it's more of the same with this braves lineup swinging at crap 2 feet off the plate and looking undisciplined as usual. 15k's is just ridiculous. Max will seriously have to throw a shutout to give us any chance because how awful this offense is. No pressure Max with this offense behind you…🙄

  14. Last i checked (and this may have changed, ya know with all these "advanced analytics" and A.I. etc…😅) so y'all can fact check me here….But i still think the All-Time record in the entire history of MLB for wins when a team scores "Zero" runs…is yep, still zero….turns out doesnt matter if its "live ball era" modern era, pre-war era, steroid era, this stat oddly still remains absolutely true…also turns out if you score less than the other team, that stat is identical also…ok, there's everyone a little sarcasm to start ya day with.
But with that said, as always
    Go Braves⚾

  15. Change the lineup…maybe let Soler leadoff..Harris second..It is a guessing game for Ozzie batting second cause it is brand new for him seeing the pitch coming from that arm angle…as far as 7-9 there is no hits or walks coming from those guys.

  16. Same old story – blah offense. When you see rookies on other teams hitting far better than Braves veterans, you have a problem. End our suffering and just lose Tuesday…
