Austin Watson signed…then waived?

Austin Watson, as expected, signed a 1-year, 2-way contract with the Detroit Red Wings today. But the confusion came minutes after the news that Justin Holl cleared waivers came across the wire. The Red Wings had waived newly signed forward — Austin Watson? If Detroit was always going to waive Watson, why waive Holl? Better yet, why waive Holl when later that same day it was announced he was staying in Detroit? What could this mean for Kasper? Well, the answer is probably more boring than you were hoping.

  1. Johannson is not NHL calibre and is going to get blown up, eaten alive and embarrassed and he's the one who should have been waived. Prototypical 2nd round swing/miss that for no good reason the Wings are holding into like he's something valuable, at the expense of better players like Kasper improving the team. Just stupid management by Yzerman

  2. You're absolutely right, Brian. There's no good reason why Kasper shouldn't be riding his exceptional preseason performance into the season and gaining valuable experience from the start. He was the best player through preseason.

  3. Last season, management made two disastrous and obviously wrong decisions in not putting Lyon in goal early enough and not bringing up Edvinsson in time. Both of these decisions surely cost a point each (at least) that was necessary to make the playoffs.
In both these cases the alternatives that management went with (Holl, Petry, Rimer) were options that did not function at all and this was obvious to anyone. It was clear to everyone and still management went on and consequently missed the playoff.
Now they risk making the same miscalculation again by keeping Kasper out and other on who showed that they don't have the caliber. (Just as you guys have pointed to)
Management repeating the simple type errors that hurt the team last season a 3rd time is mind-blowing.

  4. Well 12 forwards guarantees people get called up on the regular but yeah, it does seem pointless.

The salary cap accrual explains this however.

I also agree with Scotty about Kasper. He played against non-NHL players during preseason, the staff knows that.

  5. Kasper should center line 3 and get looks on the PK and PP2. Let him work his way up the lineup. I think 11-15 minutes in the NHL is more valuable than 20 in the AHL. Shuffle the lines, make it happen. I think we’ll get there sooner rather than later.
