Ja Morant leaves game twice as Memphis Grizzlies win preseason opener

It appears the Memphis Grizzlies dodged the injury bug biting them again with regard to the ankle rolls that pulled Ja Morant from the team’s win over the Dallas Mavericks. But should multiple bites have been possible to begin with? Host Joe Mullinax talks about that, plus Brandon Clarke’s return to form and other takeaways from the Memphis preseason victory on this episode of Locked on Grizzlies!

  1. Does nobody really see why Ja went back out? Trust me, I get what you mean about his importance, but Ja getting hurt killed all of us, including him and he knows that. Not only is basketball his life, but he truly appreciates his fans. Him coming back gave me hope and showed me that he doesn't care how "meaningless" the game is. HHe's here for us! Joe, you being a narrative guy, I know you see that too. I loved it

  2. I agree and disagree. While this was a meaningless game, with last year looming in the rearview mirror it was important that Ja show grit and toughness by coming back in the game. People get banged up in basketball, superstars included. It’s likely he asked to go back in and at some point you have to take the training wheels off and let them be great.

  3. Ja is prone to injury. If you watched the game, he jumped way too many times. If there was a stat count in the NBA on how many jumps a player jumps a night, Ja would lead the league. I am telling you, if Ja couldn't jump, he would be out of the league. Ja is nothing without his athleticism. Cause he doesn't have a clean jumper. He slashes, dunks, and floaters. Ja's shots are within 10ft of the rim.

  4. Playing solid basketball, don't grab too much, stay grounded, staying level headed is what keeps players from injuries. Also a mans walking and running tendencies styles also affect injuries. Once you start to think you are the best, play reckless, that's when its easy to get injured. This goes for all sports. If you play sports, you will understand.

  5. I agree that Ja shouldn’t have went back out after the first tweet, but we have to remember the power of a “STAR” player. He has immense power over this team!!! Since Memphis is a small market, the FO will handle Ja with kid gloves. He gets what he wants and if he doesn’t- he could hold the team hostage. He wanted to play, and he obviously wanted back in after he rolled the ankle. No other player on the roster could do that. You don’t want to piss off a superstar only for them to demand a trade. Now, we are nowhere near that, but superstars get coaches, trainers, and GM’s fired. So we have to remember how the two gun instances were handled. The FO knew they had to tread lightly and follow the commissioner when it came to punishing Morant.

Let’s look on the bright side. Morant is itching to play. Imagine if he had the mentality of Ben Simmons?!!! Morant probably won’t play the next couple of preseason games so that he can heal, but he hadn’t played an NBA game in 9 months. We wanted to share the floor with Dez, Smart, and Edey. Let’s give him and the staff some grace. It will be OK.
