  1. Chauncey: If you’re saying I play favorites, you’re wrong. I love all my children equally.

    (Earlier that day)

Chauncey: I don’t care for Douglas Fur.

  2. He’s mentioned that the best player in a practice can vary day to day. This is not the same as saying one player is universally better than all or any others on the team.

  3. Certainly our most well-rounded player, IMO. Idk about best, but it wouldn’t completely shock me if he ends up there this season.

  4. I do think Deni is going to end up being the best player on our team by the end of the year.

  5. So here’s a full breakdown of what happened:

In [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mx3AJD1ZZo&t=248s), Chauncey says the following:

“Deni… there’s been a couple days where he’s probably been the best player out there… with his playmaking and just… (he’s) a basketball player”

On October 5th, Blazers Argento, who translates all the media the Blazers put out for a Spanish audience, then [posted this](https://x.com/BlazersArgento/status/1842585140767113703):

“Deni está siendo, probablemente, el mejor jugador del equipo con su armado y como juega.”

Google translate in Twitter turns that into roughly this:

“Deni is probably the best player on the team with his setup and how he plays.”

On October 6th, Evan Sidery didn’t quote the translation, but did [tweet out](https://x.com/esidery/status/1843024213210497229) “Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups said Deni Avdija has been their best player leading up to the season.”

Then on October 7th, NBACentral, the notorious NBA twitter aggregating account, took that exact translation and [posted it here](https://x.com/TheDunkCentral/status/1843390454446076039).

And now, on October 8th, here we are! Blazers Argento just [tweeted out](https://x.com/BlazersArgento/status/1843738384860361197) (translated) “I’m going to be stuck as the one who spread something false when my tweet was about Deni being the player who was standing out the most in training camp”

And yeah, I’d agree that BA is probably most to blame here. I’m not close to fluent in Spanish, but his translation from what Chauncey said to Spanish appears to be more misleading than the translation back into English. All in all, a big nothingburger of a story.
