Story we are following from Reds Minor Leagues:

Reds MiLB Notebook: Fall and winter league baseball is on its way
Doug Gray October 7, 2024

There are a lot of fall and winter baseball leagues around the world. Some of them get a lot more attention and recognition than others. The biggest ones are the Arizona Fall League, the Dominican Winter League, the Venezuelan Winter League, the Puerto Rican Winter League, and the Mexican Winter League. But there are also leagues that take place in Australia, Nicaragua, Panama, and Colombia.

The fall and winter schedule begins later today when the Arizona Fall League gets started. The Reds prospects and big league injury rehabbers in the league won’t be playing, though, as the Glendale Desert Dogs don’t play their first game until Tuesday.

Before the week comes to an end, two other leagues will be kicking off their regular seasons. Both the Mexican and Venezuelan Winter Leagues begin on Friday. A few days after that – Wednesday October 16th – the Dominican Winter League will begin play. Nine days later the games will begin on Friday October 25th for the Nicaraguan Winter League.

It will be a bit of time before another league gets underway after that. The Puerto Rican Winter League will get started on Thursday November 7th. Things will begin in Australia on Friday November 15th.

The Panama Winter League website and social media pages don’t seem to have any information for when their league is set to begin this year. The same can be said for the Colombian Winter League. In 2023 both of the leagues began in early November.

At this point we only know about a handful of players who will be participating in the fall and winter leagues. The Reds are sending nine guys to the Arizona Fall League. Prospects Arij Fransen, Carson Rudd, Connor Phillips, Edwin Arroyo, Jose Acuna, Luis Mey, and Tyler Callihan will be joined by big league rehabbers Christian Enarnacion-Strand and Matt McLain.

What we don’t know is who will play in the other leagues. Unlike the Arizona Fall League, the other leagues don’t have players assigned to them by the big league clubs. Instead they are drafted and signed as free agents. Simply being drafted, though, doesn’t mean a player will ever actually play. It just means that the club has the rights if a player does choose to play in the league.

In the bigger leagues, you will often see prospects playing more early on in the season and as the league gets further along some get phased out as more experienced players start to show up and play. But sometimes you’ll see younger prospects play the entire way if they are performing well.

As usual – we’ll have updates on performances, highlights when available, and check ins on how players from the organization are performing in the various leagues.
