New Scottish ice hockey fan what team do I support?

Hi there, fully accept I’ll probably get a lot of daft replies to this one 😂 and forgive me, as a dumb Brit and massive football fan (the proper kind) I’ve recently stumbled into really enjoying ice hockey. Went to watch my local team The Glasgow Clan more out of boredom and something to do and came away loving it… beers at the game (not allowed them at football) 5-2 win and a punch up on the ring. Quality. I’ll be going next weekend and I can’t believe the sports not grown more over here. ANYWAY… spent the last wee while just watching NHL highlights on YouTube seen the leafs, red wings, Bruins and that team from Ottawa. Now I know you don’t really ‘choose’ what team you support as a football fan the team I was born into loses religiously so I understand you can’t just pick however
, given the fact I’ve only just discovered the sport with no real connection to it or know anyone else who is a fan maybe someone could persuade me on one? 😂

Bring in the uk at timezones for live games I was thinking eastern based? Perhaps one with an epic stadium that’d be a must visit some day or even just likeable players/supporters of a particular team (maybe a Scottish connection somewhere?) or any other fellow brits with advice

Appreciate any feedback

  1. Which football club were you born into? Perhaps we can find a similar NHL team…. although, perhaps that’d be too painful… 🤷‍♂️😂

  2. Original 6 teams (the first 6 teams in the league when it was founded in 1917) have a great history and are eastern-based. I’m biased but you can’t go wrong with the Detroit Red Wings.

  3. Well, if you like having your hopes dashed, being a fan of a team that will almost certainly never win it all, yet still has loyal backing, might I suggest the Winnipeg Jets? Go google the ‘Winnipeg Jets whiteout’ for the highlights.

Usually puts out a *good* team, just never a *great* team. Bonus: a lot of this area was originally homesteaded by Scottish immigrants (like my great-grandfather), so you’ve probably got distant relatives out this way. 🤣

  4. If you’re a Rangers fan then New York Rangers.

If you’re a Celtic fan then Boston.

If you support any other Scottish team then look at last seasons table and pick any in the bottom 10 and you’ll feel right at home.

  5. Even though I’m a Canucks fan, I’d recommend the Montreal Canadiens for ya. They’re in the East, have a ton of history (part of the original 6), and the fans in Montreal are electric, which would make Bell Centre a worthwhile visit in the future.

The Canadiens have been pretty shit the last few years, but they’re starting to build a damn good team that’ll be fun to watch soon. They’ve got a ton of young prospects that’ll be core pieces one day, including Demidov, Hutson, Reinbacher, Mailloux and Beck. They’ve also got some established young players currently playing, including Suzuki, Caufield, Xhekaj and Slafkovsky.

Imo, they’re the perfect team to start cheering for if you want to get into hockey.

  6. Philadelphia
They are on the edge of going off. Get on board early.
They’re the most storied non-original 6 team. They were a part of the first expansion in the 60’s. Some call them the original 7th team.
The Broad Street Bullies era in the 70’s and 80’s were dominant.
They were good in the 90’s but have had a rough last 10 years. They’re now on the road upswing again.

They have a super exciting young team right now.
Russian phenom 19 yr old Matvei Michkov
Theyre first round pick this year Jett Luchanko made the club and is the youngest player to ever suite up for the organization.
Captain Sean Couturier is a former Selke (best defensive forward in the league).

and of course you’ll get the laughs from Coach John “Torts” Tortorella

  7. Hockey is really fun in person. Maybe pick one team that’s good now and one up and coming?

  8. If you like watching endless stressful periods during playoffs… CBJ is your team!
But no, a team will spark your interest as you watch this season!

  9. I would suggest watching games from many different teams to begin with to see which one you connect with. With that being said, Nathan Walker plays for the St. Louis Blues.

  10. Start as a Glasgow fan. Being a fan of other teams will also “pick you” if you just enjoy watching hockey more than semi randomly

  11. Detroit red wings.
History is s-tier, jerseys are clasic and clean, good up and coming team. Good fans, not arseholes

  12. It’s the Habs. We are the closest team by proxy, and the most winnigiest in the history of the league. But nobody will claim your jumping on the bandwagon because it’s been 30 plus years since a title. The lore, the history, the legends. I dare you to join us. 🙂

  13. If your like me, and enjoy dying on the inside every game every year, the go with the Sabres. They will have talent and they will have great highlights but will lose all the time and not make the playoffs every year. Lol go Sabres!

  14. Flyers are a young team that probably won’t be good for a few more years but you’ll see a lot of young guys progress. I might be biased…

  15. Well, Calgary takes its name from a place in Scotland. So there’s that. The Flames are kind of in limbo though on the downward spiral. Plus, being out West time-wise may not be the best. But if I were just getting into a sport, I don’t see much fun in picking a team already in the top 5. More enjoyable to root for a team as they grow and develop.

  16. Pick two teams! One from the east and one from the west.

Pick one currently good team and one bad team.

I’m a leafs fan by birth.

  17. Carolina hurricanes look up storm surge on YT and any jarvis interview. Plus our mascot is a pig. Really fun team to watch.

  18. probably an atlantic division team. more exciting rivalries and closest to your time zone

  19. Carolina Hurricanes, we embrace it when people talk crap about us (i.e. Bunch of Jerks), last few years been contenders for the cup, and have a pretty fun group of guys. Everybody loves a good storm surge after a win, and if they don’t, they should.
