Daily Minors Quick-Notes 10/12/24 – The Giants AFL Contigent gets their first home run…but from whom?

Scottsdale picked up the much needed win with a great combined pitching performance, but the Giants offense finally picked up its first home run of the fall…though it’s not from who you think.  Also, a rehabbing hopeful soon-to-be Dodger Beater from the Mets, and the return of a Top 50 overall prospect who has missed two full seasons of baseball.

Giants Prospects to Spotlight:

  • 3B Charlie Szykowny: 1-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR (1) – Szykowny picked up the first home run from the Giants contingent, having gone 1-for-4 in each of his two games so far.  Szykowny had
  • DH Bryce Eldridge: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K – A bit of a better game for Eldridge, collecting his first walk, though he’s still seeking his first big hit.  He’s 3-for-16 (.188) with a double, but with seven strikeouts to one walk
  • C Drew Cavanaugh: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 2B (1), 1 K – Cavanaugh made his first game in the fall, picking up a double.  He played just 47 games in the regular season, mostly at Low-A San Jose where he hit .230, but also had nine impressive Triple-A games, where he was 9-for-30 (.300).
  • RP Tyler Vogel: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K – Also making his fall debut was Vogel, part of a fine effort by the Scottsdale pitching staff.  Vogel pitched 15 games in Eugene, where he had a 4.74 ERA and 22 strikeouts to 12 walks in 24.2 innings.

Top Scottsdale Rehabbing Player Lines:

  • RF Jeff McNeil: 1-5, 1 R, 1 RBI – McNeil is hoping to get back onto the NLCS roster to try and beat the Dodgers, but it’s unclear if the Mets are ready to activate him.

Other Scottsdale Top Prospect Lines: Player Name: Stats

  • 1B Josue Briceño (DET, #9 Team): 3-4, 3 R, 5 RBI, 3 HR (3) – Wow.
  • LF Drew Gilbert (NYM, #74 Overall): 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB

Top Glendale Prospect Lines:

  • SP Andrew Painter (PHI, #32 Overall): 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K 1 HR – Andrew Painter made his first appearance in a game since September 16th, 2022, after going Tommy John surgery before the 2023 season.  He was the #13 pick in 2021, and is still considered a top prospect with a triple-digit-touching fastball, which he throws equally well with two seams or four, plus a strong slider and plus control…at least before the surgery.
  • DH Bryan Rincon (PHI, #10 Team): 1-5, 1 R, 2 K
  • SS Colson Montgomery (CWS, #37 Overall): 0-1, 1 HBP
  • Gabriel Rincones, Jr. (PHI, #11 Team): 0-2, 2 BB
  • LF Otto Kemp (PHI, #28 Team): 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K
  • RP Peyton Pallette (CWS, #27 Team): 2.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 K, 1 HR

Programming Note

After today’s game, the Scottsdale Scorpions are off for the next two days  It’s a weird schedule quirk.  So, I’ll see you all again Tuesday night/Wednesday morning!

  1. Definitely looking like Bryce needs to start in AA once the season kicks off and move from there. I have confidence he will pick it up, but he’s probably exhausted from the workload of a very long season for him.
