Avalanche Can’t Get Out Of Their Own Way, Get Throttled By Vegas

The Colorado Avalanche had probably their worst opening night ever Wednesday night in Las Vegas, but it didn’t initially start that way!

Mikko Rantanen scored the first goal of the season, and an eventual hat trick, but the Vegas Golden Knights got two quick goals at the end of the first period. Whenever the Avalanche did anything to pull back to within a goal, Vegas took the momentum back almost immediately.

In the end, it was an ugly 8-4 loss for the Avs.

  1. The Avs are gonna have to figure something out defensively because you just can’t trust Georgiev, his compete level just isn’t there. Both the Olofsson goals were so bad.
Edit: maybe give Annunen a lot more looks early on and see if he can be the guy

  2. Toronto and Edmonton both shut out. Calgary, after being down to Vancouver 4-1, come back and win. The Avs losing 8-4 to Vegas. Weird Night! A preview of the season to be played? Probably not, although having four rookies in your lineup, defenses lapses, and bad goaltending might be a preview of the Avs season.

  3. And here we go again – the same old record – it is all Georgiev’s fault. It does not matter that Toews and Makar looked terrible at 3 Vegas goals and Girard looked like an amateur at Barbashev’s second goal and Annunen, “the great Annunen,” got two goals out of 4 shots!!!! But no, all that does not matter. It was, it is, and it will always be Georgiev’s fault. I wonder, who will get the blame when Georgiev will finally go to a team that supports the no. 1 goalie??? 🤬🤮👎👎👎👎👎😔🤮

  4. Major turning point in the game was the end of the 1st when Mack lost his coverage on both goals to completely shift the momentum of the game. Avs were the better team up to that point and those two mistakes created a domino effect where they just started shooting themselves in the foot over and over. Could write a novel on the defensive breakdowns and poor goaltending but it’s only game one and not going to panic just yet. I do agree with Shaggy that they need to dictate the games and not wait until their backs are against the wall to wake up as it’s not sustainable. On to game two and let’s see how they respond.

  5. I don't want to watch another season of the team trying to outscore the mistakes in Goal. I feel like we are right back where we started with Georgiev before he woke up in the playoffs last year after the Jet's first game. 🤦‍♂

  6. I hate to say it but the goaltending was pretty bad for the AV's last night. When Eichel, Stone, Barbashev got some space, it usually lead to a goal. The Avs looked great for the most part. But as you mentioned, yes, Manson "provided" a screen, but he did not move his head for vision. That's one of the things they teach you playing goalie, you get screened, find a way to see the puck, move your head, keep it on a swivel, if that don't work push your screen out of the way.

  7. The Avs were locked in defensively to start the game. Georgie lets in a soft one, and it immediately deflated the team in which d-zone lapses compiled. The Avs tried clawing back multiple times only to be let down with more soft goals. Hill made enough key saves to keep the Avs at bay. Georgie did not. You're also asking a lot from Juice to come in cold and bail your team out. The Toews double minor eventually killed all the momentum being built in the 3rd. Cmac shouldn't have patience for goaltending issues this year.

  8. I don’t think the Avs played all that bad. Vegas gave up just as many plays

Difference being is Hill bailed them out for the most part.

Now all pre-season we all said that this stretch of the season will be tough until Lehky, Val and Gabe come back. However,

I don’t think three forwards would’ve made much difference here tonight.

Can’t always score your way out of a problem

  9. I'll just sit back and laugh. Delusional Avs fans can keep thinking it's solely on the goalie, but the lacking defenders in front of him didn't help him at all. Thanks so much MacFartin for all the stupid puck moving defenders that don't know how to defend net front. Georgiev already getting left out to dry. Long season ahead, followed by a short postseason if they get there.

  10. I took an impromptu fishing trip to my secret spot, came back to eat some delicious, homemade nachos, then passed out til 11pm, missing the entire game. Pretty great day!

  11. I’m not gonna say that it’s time to panic after 1 game, but I also can’t ignore the glaring similarities of this game when compared to all of last season.

Tough to win when the other team scores a goal on every single defensive breakdown, and scores a couple when there isn’t a defensive breakdown. In no world should NHL goalies give up 7 goals on 20 shots, even if every single shot was a breakaway.

Can the defensive play be better? Of course it can. Does a goalie need to make some tough saves regardless? Of course they do. Adin Hill wasn’t very good either, but still only gave up 4 on 31 shots because he came up with SOME saves at times. Georgiev and Justus played at an unacceptable level.

I hope it is just a one off bad performance because I can’t take another whole season of this crap. I thought C-Mac would have learned his lesson last year and moved on from Georgiev…but here we are again haha

  12. The good: Manson and Moose were excellent tonight. I also love to see the Avs 2C on the scoreboard in game 1—so glad that problem is behind us.

The bad: Penalties, especially that Wood boarding call. Why do that? Ritchie looked timid tonight, but it’s expected from a rookie (especially at his age).

The ugly: Goaltending. You just can’t let in 5 goals on 16 shots, I don’t care how bad the defense in front of him was.

  13. A few episodes ago i mentioned that i dont know how they make the salary wrok when gabe, lehky, and val are all back. I really think wood and georgiev have until then to do something. Soft goals and bad penalties continue to follow those 2. Georgie needs to play better because if annunen plays better in his starts he will be part if the solution to the cap problem, and they dont need wood with everyone back if he is going be a penalty liability again this season

  14. Sound check-I have dead zones in my commute so I pop on the radio…Bring Me To Life (Wake Me Up Inside), dedicated to our #40…We saw it in the playoffs…Still hopeful – great show, guys! Glad we are still smiling and finding the positives 🙂

  15. VGK fan here, in response to Chris’ frustration with our response goals…2 years ago when we won the SC, we were excellent when responding to opponent’s goals quickly, last year…not so much. 9:21

  16. Hey fellas, glad to be back with you for the season! Was hopeful that Chris would realize that his camera constantly back focuses, making his face kinda blurry but his back wall sharp as fuck! ANYWAYS, I hate Georgie, i hate Georgie, I hate Georgie. Why don't we get a new goalie? Why are we wasting this incredible offensive talent we have by not firming up the goalie position? SO FRUSTRATING!

  17. Makar played a good game? Hopefully that was sarcasm.

When you pay nine million per season to a player, that player without any pressure clears the puck on the penalty kill absolutely every single time without a slightest excuse. Not passes to the opponent and next time you touch the puck is to pick up from your own net.

Makar had at least one other Vegas goal directly as his fault.

  18. My problem with the whose fault is it question is we know Georgiev's ceiling is well below the floor of our stars. We can be justifiably frustrated when they have a lackluster performance. However while it may be inappropriate to vent as much frustration at Georgiev, it's very unproductive to continue to keep him in net with trusted optimism. It just doesn't make sense. The guy isn't going to be better just because we need him to or want him to. He is what he is.

  19. "Got to give them more time", Georgie has been atrocious for years now. If the fans don't expect him to make a save then how much is that on the mind of the players. They must dread every shot that is taken.

  20. this felt like one of the dallas playoff games we score they come back with 2 we get one back and 17secs later they score and so on, that quick strike to let goals right back to the opponent has been bad for us the last 2 years

  21. at one point in the game in the 2nd period we had vegas in there end for 2 mins only one guy changed near the end of the 2 mins and we couldnt get nothing from it 🙁

  22. Until the top players play hard defense this team won’t go anywhere. When they won the cup they were tough to play against and exit passes were tough for the other team. The want to play hard isn’t there. Can’t be all about offense

  23. I'm not sure if I have the patience for Georgiev's shenanigans this year. Last year really killed it for me. I think we're seeing exactly why the Rangers were okay with moving him. I don't think he has the mentality for a starter. I really hope this wasn't a precursor to how this season is going to turn out. Offense can't bail him out 82 times, and defense can only do so much if Georgiev can't get out of his head.

Sound check: Green Day – Jinx
