[Nieves] 9 months ago every agent criticized me and Teo for taking a 1-year deal. The truth is, the market was soft for everyone, and he was coming off a down year while playing in a very pitcher friendly environment.

Some interesting info here from Teo’s agent, which seems to explain why a reunion with the Jays never happened

We were looking for a 3-year deal, and while reading the market and realizing that deal might not exist, I asked him what his priority was and he said he wanted to win and play deep into October, so we pivoted and focused on getting the best short term deal on the best team interested.

Here we are 9 months later:

Career high HR ✅
Career high wRC+ ✅
Career high rWAR ✅
All-Star ✅
Home Run Derby Champ ✅
Best regular season record in MLB ✅
NLCS appearance ✅

He will win his 3rd Silver Slugger, and will probably get some MVP votes.

On top of that, he made more money this year than he would have made on that 3-year deal and now he will go back out on the market after a career year.

Who’s laughing now?

I have a hard time believing the best offer he got was 3 Y @ $7.83 M per.

Saying that definitely worked out for him an hoping he gets paid. He will get much better offers no doubt but I don’t think the market will be great for a 32 YO borderline playable corner OF.

  2. I never lost faith in him. He was/is exactly the type of player missing from the Jays now. Traded away in a misguided “defence first” strategy. Happy to see him so close to a ring. He’s the ONLY reason I’d be fine if the Dodgers win it all this year.

  3. Hated the day Jays let go of Teo. Still hate the front office today. But Teo go get that bag!

  4. Semi spicy take that probably won’t satisfy anyone: Trading him was a legitimate move, FO should have also looked to sign him when he was on the market

  5. I’m just happy Teo is having a great season on a great team, participating in some exciting playoff games while being a star. Hope he keeps it up to win the WS.

  6. Let’s say they keep him for 2023, does the team improve? Hard to say. However he would of gotten a qualifying offer if he performed like he did in 21/22. Getting Swason for 4 years isn’t awful. I don’t see the Blue Jays over paying him in FA or extending him. before the 2024 season started. Also if he was looking for 3 years coming off the 2023 Seattle year he would be looking for 4 years if he had a good year in toronto. I don’t see this front office giving him that.

  7. Not the team owner who has to pay his next contract hahs way to go Teo ..we all miss you up here

  8. Honestly, he took a page out Vanvleet’s playbook and bet on himself. Happy for Teo and I still miss him on the Jays.
