What I’m guessing happened: Saquon is about 5 yards from the first down, but is just catching the ball, so is currently not moving [0 mph].
The defender is also about 5 yards away from the first down [just outside the frame], but is closer to a full sprint towards Saquon [bc he started running at Saquon while the ball was thrown].
So in the same amount of time, with defender traveling faster in that time [not starting at 0 mph right when ball is caught], and relatively equal distance to the first down, the defender could get to Saquon before he got to the 1st
His biggest concerns were getting out of bounds to stop the clock, which he did, and protecting the ball, which he did. Would have been a way worse play if he picked up one more yard and got tackled inbounds. Just happened to have the ball a bit behind the line, which I’m sure isn’t keeping him up at night.
