This is he most jarring graph I’ve seen about the 49ers this year

Wow. Lombardi can spin a golden thread around a pile of bullshit like no one but this one hits different.

That is craaaaazy. I knew we were struggling but holy shit I didn't realize we were the far far far low left 9ers like that.

  1. On the brightside, looks like Purdy is a real one. I am holding out hope that the training staff has been telling our players to go down and conserve for the latter half of the season.

  2. Maybe it’s because Kyle doesn’t need to game plan around a limited QB anymore. Purdy can actually push it down field so he doesn’t have to run a bunch of shallow routes that rely on YAC for the offense to succeed.

  3. It’s really just showing offensive tendencies. The teams on the left use a lot more screens behind the LOS and short passing concepts so they get a lot of YAC.

This year Purdy has been throwing it deep a lot more and checking down less to the RB with CMC out so the offense is way on the right.

It’s also not like the Niners have been struggling to move the ball up the field, the Niners have been a better offense than most of those teams on the left. They just haven’t been able to execute properly in the redzone (little things like bad routes, missed blocks, missed reads).

  4. I’m guessing the absence of CMC, Aiyuk coming in out of shape, Deebos injury all contribute to this

  5. Niners are second in the league in passing yards per game, so maybe this isn’t anything to worry about.

Also, this graph is misleading. Niners are at 32% while Vikings are at 40%, but the graph makes it look like the Vikings’ YAC is 5 times greater.

  6. Is it because no CMC, and an underperforming Aiyuk? I get that Brock is throwing it downfield more, but why would that affect YAC so severely? Is he throwing it into more coverage traffic? The drop off from the 31st worst team (Vikings) is drastic.

  7. I just haven’t seen thr downwind blocking this squad was known and loved for in the past.

Other than Juice looking at all22 replays etc it seems as soon as someone isn’t targeted they stop playing, instead of getting in position to help with the play.

Last year around this time I theorized Kyle was playing 4d chess. We made the Show.

Maybe it’s a similar situation this year. This seems like the kind of stat that may regress to the mean..

OP deleted now so the comment is lost but literally 12 mo ago I said ‘we clowning on the Cards to hide our hand before the Dallas game’. I kind of feel the same way about this year. Obviously it hasn’t been as smooth sailing this year.

Oh I said 3d chess. Weird.

  8. It’s so funny cause even regardless of these numbers, just watching the games, Mahomes is getting wayyy more carried by scheme this year than Brock ever was last year. That Monday night game against the Saints, not a single one of Mahomes completions was considered a tight window throw! Juju was open by like 10 yards on most of his catches.

  9. No. This is not bad news. This is good news.

Rather than throwing short passes to receivers who are in a position to get another 10 yards, Purdy is hitting deeper receivers, which means the ball is in the air longer, which gives defenders time to close.

Ask yourself; would you rather have a 3 yard pass with 10 YAC, or a 20 yard pass.

  10. I can’t remember if I checked this before or after the hawks game but everyone was basically at 1/2 of their YAC the last few seasons. I think it will regress to the mean and they’ll be fine.

  11. This just infers how pass yards are acquired. Who’s most west coast. Total passing yards is a magnitude more relevant. And the 49ers are #4 in the NFL.

  12. This is a comically deceiving graph with it starting at 30% lol. It’s really not that crazy that we’re at 32% which is only 8% back

  13. This shows Purdy is the real deal and not some guy being carried by talented receivers.

  14. The absolute homer in me wants to wave this away as a combo of Aiyuk being crap so far, Deebo being injured, Kittle being injured and Shanny trying to save all his YAC heavy plays for later in the season, so there’s less tape on it.

The last line I think has some truth to it. We tend to get bogged down more in the playoffs, as there’s so much tape on our plays. Maybe Shanahan is trying to keep those under wraps?

Or you know, its cause our WRs aren’t performing up ot their previous standards yet.

  15. This means nothing except that Kyle and Brock are adjusting as defenses adjust to us. We NEEDED a YAC-heavy scheme with Jimmy because he sucked throwing deep. We don’t need it anymore.

  16. the graph starts at 30% and ends at 70%, and it’s a % of each teams total receiving yards.

Given that context, it’s not that alarming.

  17. Jarring, but I actually love this.

Brock is throwing dimes downfield into tight coverage.

He’s still getting big gains, but ball carriers are getting hit quicker because of the coverage. If defenses are playing tight now, they are gonna get eaten up on screens once cmc is back and Aiyuk gets his ass back into game shape after missing all off season lol.

This means Brock is more confident in his throws and he doesn’t always have to rely on getting YAC from a short route when he can go for the deeper ones in tight coverage.

I’m so happy we have a QB 😂

  18. Its jarring because it is deliberately misleading. Start the graph at zero, not at thirty and it looks pretty dull.

  19. Big play Brock type of year. Not gonna be able to send Deebo from behind scrimmage and defenders are gonna make it harder to get downfield from a throw inside 10 yds. This year the big plays down field from Brock are gonna get it done. He already opened the vertical game with his arrival and now it’s the time to lean on it whether we’re ready or not.
