AJ Preller on 2024 season, Padres payroll, free agency, who’s at SS & talks with Mike Shildt

Padres GM A.J. Preller puts a wrap on the 2024 season, ongoing talks with Mike Shildt, if he expects pitching coach Ruben Niebla to return, expected payroll in 2025, who’s playing shortstop and addressing the team’s internal free agents.

  1. I thought AJ did extremely well putting this team together considering the spending restraints this past year. That said, the Bogaerts signing really looks questionable at this point. The second game vs. the Dodgers seemed to take Padres hitters off station to station ball and more into over-swinging the rest of the series. AJ has his work cut out for him in 2025.

  2. I think in the end what did us in was the re-appearance of our 1st half problem – bats go ice cold for stretches of 2-3 games, then come back strong for 2-3 games. While the players spend the offseason tweaking their game, I think Shildt needs to figure that anomaly out. He needs to look back at all those 3 game stretches and find the similarities in pitchers, swings we took against them, batting order, whatever. That was what killed us in the end (besides Cease, who I no longer want to see in a playoff game).

  3. Would have made it to the World Series if you hadn't let Snell walk. Snell was a Dodger killer! And please bring Ruben our pitching coach back! He is one of the best in the business, and highly respected!

  4. Not that I’m an expert, but priority should be re-signing Tanner Scott, extending Ruben Niebla, and bringing back Blake Snell. A bonus would be to bring in Benji Gil as a bench coach. His SD/TJ roots should bring about a sense of humility and respect for the game amongst the players, that was palpable in his WBC tenure as the manager for team Mexico. He’s expressed his desire to be apart of the organization to bring about the first WS.

  5. Cease lost us that series blew 2 games & the manager is at fault letting him pitch again on 3 days rest was a horrendous decision. Hitters gonna be thrown under the bus but Padres hitters went to Dodger stadium & Petco playing to sweep.

  6. One thing I learned this postseason is that Manny Machado and Xander Bogarts are extremely overpaid. Like criminally overpaid. Look at their lack of production. My god! What a waste of cash honestly. That’s gonna prevent the Padres from being competitive in the years to come. Sad story.

  7. Too many showboats who from time to time don’t hustle. Expect the Dodgers to have back a lot of their injured pitching. Manny is a lock for third base but they need to figure out the rest of the infield. The playoffs is a crapshoot

  8. I hope Padre ownerships is doing all possible due diligence and making a well thought out list of potential candidates for Padres General Manager and President of Operations. As in two separate people providing some oversight and checks and balances to the entire organization from the minor leagues to scouting, free agent signings and hiring and firing. The Padres need someone that can implement a philosophy throughout the organization regarding how to draft, coach and build a team from the minor leagues to the pros that has played together to becomes a consistent contender and ultimately win a WS.

  9. Key takeaway for “bandwagon fans” welcome to the stinging clubhouse of crushed spirits. Takes a resilient breed, but thank you for showing up. It was a sight to see, hear, feel and experience! Chins up there are still a lot of right people and pieces in place to make it happen.

  10. This team was set up well this year, well enough to beat the Dodgers our so called big brothers. How did our bats go cold and give our LA brothers the golden road to the WS. Instead of additions or letting guys go just go hire a sports psychologist/hypnotherapist to work on our hitters. You cant go quiet for 20 plus innings without it being a mental barrier. It is not motivation but a mental consistency obstacle. And give Yu a bonus, he kept us competing!
