This was the "Royal Way" in the 70s. Hal McRae brought this brand of baseball when he came over from Cincinnati. The Royals used speed and hustle to gain an advantage over teams anchored to pull hitters and power. Royals Stadium was not an easy place to hit homers. It did have a turf that played fast and deep gaps which encouraged doubles and triples.
