Padres were “down the road” with Juan Soto before Peter Seidler passed

Jon Heyman reported that the Padres had an excellent chance of signing Juan Soto. Do you think this could be accurate?

  1. Had the Padres had the misfortune of signing Soto to a mega contract to go with the rest of the big contracts they currently have they probably would have been screwed for the next 10 to 15 years. There's no way they could have put a complete roster together with his contract plus the contracts they already had. Even when he was on the team their roster was restricted in talent because of payroll. That's why the top of their lineup was All Star and the rest of their lineup was AAA, otherwise known as automatic outs. If they didn't have a couple of contracts that are killing them right now they MIGHT have survived a Soto contract but a Soto contract added to the mess they already have would have been a DISASTER for this organization's future. They would have been incapable putting a pitching staff together that it takes to win a championship. Even with Peter alive there is no way they could have handled a payroll with a BALANCED lineup.

  2. I guess it’s possible for the Dodgers to do it because he is so young. They could probably offer him 34 million a year for 16 years. If he’s willing to defer 30% that would only cost them 28 mill per year against the payroll which is only 5 mill more than Teoscar

  3. Why is it hard for you to understand? Seidler was willing to do whatever he could for the city of San Diego, the new owners are about money first. I think it’s pretty obvious that the reason why Seidler didn’t get the deal done for Soto sooner was because he wanted to make a play for Ohtani first, and if the Ohtani sweepstakes failed he was going to sign Soto. He had promised Darvish he would make it big push for Ohtani and Yamamoto. But that wasn’t possible if they signed Soto first

  4. Why is this news. NOW? Soto has been in the WS twice since 2019 and we have Manny in this same time span. Our Mr. Pay me my money. UNREAL ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  5. Siedler was ready to spend whatever on whoever. Owners now are trying to balance pulling a profit while also fielding a championship team. Which is admirable. But still wish we had Siedler who was down to take a loss in the profit column if it meant a championship for San Diego. That sort of generosity is more than admirable, it’s fuckin heroic.

  6. Honestly I’m happy with what we got from Soto for relatively nothing while he was in SD coupled with what we got back in return in the trade. Siedler was willing to pay anything to anyone, he was a billionaire who knew he was dying and he couldn’t take it with him. Things are different now and taking on more gigantic contracts is not the right formula for the padres.
