Bengals’ Zac Taylor takes blame for game-changing call vs. Eagles
Chris Roling
October 28, 2024
Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor veered far off his usually conservative path during the Week 8 blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, and it cost the team dearly.
Down seven points near the fourth quarter, Taylor went for it on a fourth-and-one from his own team’s 39-yard line. The effort failed, the Eagles took over with amazing field position and ran away with the game to the 37-17 final.
After the game, Taylor shouldered all of the blame.
“I felt like we needed to be aggressive there. It didn’t work out, so that’s frustrating,” Taylor said. “I put that on myself. It was a situation where we felt like we needed to be aggressive and get a score on that possession given we were down seven. Anytime it doesn’t go well, obviously, you’ve got to think long and hard about that decision.”
This is one of those things where a coach looks great if it works and even worse if it doesn’t.
The problem here is, it was an odd time to take the risk after just failing on a third-and-short and knowing Taylor’s defense had been struggling.
Taylor can’t really win either way, though. He’s had some infamous moments of crawling into a conservative shell this year. He didn’t here and the fact of the matter is simple — at 3-5, the team’s season is on life support.
ZAC TAYLOR
Head coach
On the decision to go for it on fourth-and-one late in the third quarter, what are your thoughts?
“I felt like we needed to be aggressive there. It didn’t work out, so that’s frustrating. I put that on myself. It was a situation where we felt like we needed to be aggressive and get a score on that possession given we were down seven. Anytime it doesn’t go well, obviously you’ve got to think long and hard about that decision.”
Overall, how would you sum up the performance today?
“The second half wasn’t good enough. We didn’t make enough plays, enough calls, lost the turnover battle. They scored on every possession in the second half. Offensively, we really walked away with essentially three turnovers. I thought we did a good job coming out with the touchdown drive to match them, and then turnover on downs, pick and fumble, and that’s not good enough for us.”
Speak about the play call on the fourth-and-one and the screen to Ja’Marr Chase. What was the idea there?
“He’s one of the options. The play didn’t work, and that’s 100 percent on me.”
What about the third-and-one earlier that you were stopped on? What did you like in that spot?
“That’s off the game plan.”
How difficult is it to be winless at home?
“It’s frustrating. Everybody deserves better.”

Joe Mixon held the locker room together!
The new marvin lewis era has begun thanks front office
We will never be a good team or competitive team because we do not run the damn football look at the teams in the NFL that can run the football look at their records Zack needs to go because he doesn't run the football when's the last time we had a 80 or 100 yard rusher right nobody can remember maybe I'll go look that up when I'm done with this message anyways we need to get rid of the coach and Lou as well
Not an epic rant. Just a lot of whining. No solution. Outcome based observation.
Having Higgins and OBjr would've helped, idk if we win with both playing tho
The non-usage of jermaine Burton and Chuck sizzle is criminal. Zac can't scheme for shit. He needs to be fired or hand over play calling
Yo how did Zack threw Joe off next the bus? I’m willing to take a losing season and fall out of the playoffs to get rid of this incompetent fuck!!! I’m done and if we keep him even after that I’m done following this team until they get rid of his dumb ass!!!
The offense was not terrible yesterday. But the defense sure was
Zac Taylor and defense is awful .once they lost opening game to pats new they are bad
I wanna point out that the year we went to The Superbowl, we actually DIDN'T get there strictly off the play of Burrow. Infact it was more the defense, especially in the playoffs. If our defense didn't keep us in the Titans game & especially The Chiefs game we would've never made it to The Superbowl. Yes of coarse Burrow made plays but it was definitely more the defense. Now when we went back to the AFC Championship the next year it was a little more balanced.
Miss Joe Mixon we got Moss garbage
Yes! The 3rd rant is spot on. The Bengals would’ve won the superbowl maybe 2 with a top tier coach. Yes they were there because the defense was really good and Burrow and Chase were that good in spite of the bad coaching. Taylor is the worst play caller over and over again in key moments. Yes fourth down and throw behind the sticks. That was stupid. The coaching experiment with no coaching pedigree is over. Sign a top 5 NFL coach next year and maybe you’ll be able to sign Chase before his contract runs out. By the way, Joe Mixon was not the problem. Run blocking is the issue
zac taylor has never had better than the 8th best offense in the league despite having joe burrow, jamarr chase, tee higgins, joe mixon, tyler boyd, etc. it's so sad how badly he squanders the talent he has
The complete inability for ZT to "figure" out how to throw against shell or two high is grounds enough to fire him. He sounds like a great baseball bench coach. Joe Brady would have Burrow cooking week in and week out….plenty of other offensive minds would. There needs to be a new philosophy on the roster next year. You consistently whiff on draft picks, letting go of Reader is a gut punch, and the rest of the defense just looks soft.
I will continue to say it – draft and trade for the DA HAWGS. Offensive line – DA HAWGS will move people. DA HAWGS will pass block! The best QB, running backs, receivers do not make a difference when DA HAWGS are not doing their job. The very same can be said for defensive HAWGS. Those guys are to create enough chaos to free up the LB's and D-backs to do their job. Football is NOT rocket science! Get the big boys to do the job. Oh, by the way, how is Joe Mixon doing this year?
At the end of the day, we have an organizational issue. We’ve had talent on both sides of the ball, but allowed them to walk because the Cincinnati Bengals is being ran organizationally like a small business. So many stars have walked out or was basically told that they’re not coming back, situations like Andrew Whitworth, Jesse, Bates, and many more. What makes things worse is management knows that there are issues but are not gonna do anything to fix them because of their small business mindset and that’s the issue in my opinion.
"Angry Elliot" is my favorite Elliot.
We gotta ask also, is Burrow as good as we think he is? Probably they will lose 7 of 9 down the stretch.
Don’t forget the WORST owner in the nfl. “mikie”. Would Never have had the balls to hire a Forrest Gregg, like his Dad.
If not good enough this year, what will make it good next year?
There has been at least two losses due to coaching.
No Tee most of the time and losing Boyd has proven to be a problem!! The defense is garbage without Bates & Reader.
Fire Zac Taylor. Give Lou the reins for the rest of the year and see how he does.
It was actually 4th and 3 but I get the frustration, terrible call by Taylor
zac taylor is the problem for sure he needs to be fired fact and all this talent and a top 3 qb and top 2 wr and you can't win a game with this much talent zac is a joke and he is no sean mcvay even though he coached under him
The Eagles had their Pro Bowl TE out along with half their o-line. Every team has injuries. Have to get a stop to have a chance to win and I’m pretty sure Higgins plays offense.
