Jorge Soler to the Los Angeles Angels! His Stats, What About Trout DHing and the Starting Rotation?

What does Jorge Soler bring to the Los Angeles Angels? On today’s show, we’ll take a look at the trade that sent Griffin Canning to the Atlanta Braves in return for Soler, dive into his numbers, and discuss how his bat will impact this lineup. Plus, if Soler is here, what does that mean for Mike Trout and him getting time in the DH spot? Now that Canning is gone, what becomes of the starting rotation? What does this trade mean for the remainder of the offseason?
We’ll get into GM Perry Minasian’s comments about the move, the outfield, the rotation, and the Angels’ plans on today’s Locked On Angels!

  1. Jorge Soler IMO makes Taylor Ward more expendable now. Money-wise it is about the figures the same amount of $13M for both players. Soler having more HR potential than Ward. If we are honest with ourselves, Ward's second half numbers are at garbage time and stat padding. Fielding abilities of Soler are questionable, but all season we seen Ward with no urgency and lackluster efforts. So I would take the game on Soler at LF and trade Ward for whatever you can get.

As far as the rotation now:
    1. Tyler
    2. Soriano
    3. Kochanowicz
The 4 and 5 spots are up for grab. Silseth and Detmers have to compete for their spots.

Trout is again my full-time DH. Adell at RF, Moniak CF, and Soler LF. Campero, Teodosio, and even Lugo can be the other depth 4th OF. Kavadas is also learning LF at the Arizona Fall League can be another consideration. Jordyn Adams needs another full season to cook.

This was the 1st move of many quoted by GMPM. So grab your popcorn and see what happens next…

  2. A good move especially if Soler can come back to his earlier form with 41 homers.

Moniak will clear waivers, and Griffin Canning can be replaced with a free agent. Let's keep an eye on whether Atlanta can develop him into the pitcher we always wanted him to be. That will tell me whether Enright is the right pitching coach.

  3. Regarding the outfield situation, thinking back to 2023, when Ward was struggling, Moniak was called up and started, with the two of them platooning for a while. When Ward regained his form, Renfroe, who was playing in RF, moved to 1B, and Moniak took over RF.

In 2024, Ward fell into a slump for about two months but continued to start. Was this because he had established himself as a veteran, or was it simply because the bench only had Pillar, who was retiring that year?

Now, in 2025, if Trout and Soler share DH and outfield duties, would Ward, Moniak, and Adell rotate in the outfield depending on their individual performances, like they did in 2023? Or is the plan to trade Ward for a starting pitcher to fill the void left by Canning?

  4. I think we need a plan to become a good team over the long term, rather than building a team that can make the playoffs next year. Recruiting players over the age of 30 is traumatic for me.

  5. Watched him in Miami every night (he missed his entire first contact year). You're right about the Ks, exit velo, and lots of LOBs. Streaky as all get out. Outfield play is subpar. He's ok, which says a lot about what $13m buys. I suspect Soler will be unimpressive, if adequate, for the $13m, but his cycle is due. He plays under 100 games due to injuries.

  6. I like the move. It’s not Royals Soler but he’s still a solid above average bat. Willie Freakin Calhoun was our dh for the majority of this past season for goodness sake. Canning was one of the worst starting pitchers in ALL of baseball last year. If the Braves turn him into prime Maddux so be it he wasn’t going to be that here. I’ve even seen Braves fans say this may be just a straight salary dump and the plan is to non tender him or flip him ala Stassi. Only slight concern I have is that our projected everyday lineup is so righty heavy. Schanuel and the switch hitting Rengifo being the only regulars( there’s Moniak also but I don’t see him being more than a spot starter/ late inning replacement )who can bat left. The offseason is young and there’s still plenty of time to address it. Go Halos!

  7. Good trade. Under Washington, Soler could possibly even become a better overall hitter (even though he is pretty much set in what he does). He was loved in Miami. I think this is a good fit for him and for the Halos.

  8. Canning wasn’t solid so moving him was a good move but was not expecting another OF. Ward was doing good at lead off had a very good September. Ward LF
    Adell CF
    Moniak RF
    Trout DH
Was my choosing for next year… but now we have Jorge, are we removing monaik? Questions….

Being an angels fan is so stressful sometimes… lmao.

Being in Japan, everyone team hopped to the Dodgers. I just get laughed at, but I really wanted the angels get a championship ring before the dodgers but that didn’t happen lol
