Domino’s That’s Hockey: New captain, new coach, same old Leafs?

The Maple Leafs came into the season with a new head coach running the show and a fresh captain after Auston Matthews was handed the ‘C’ from John Tavares. Despite the changes, are these the same old Leafs? Jamie McLennan joins Domino’s That’s Hockey to discuss.

  1. What if the business model of MLSE is to be productive, stay in the hunt and sucker in rabid fans thinking that a Stanley Cup is the goal. I think as long as merch, tickets and beer is being sold to excess…that's their success. Leaf fans deserve better, but as long as you keep showing up year over year with nothing to show, why would MLSE do anything different. The core 4 or 5 sell tickets and give you "hope", but in reality they play the same perimeter game in the playoffs, which we know has not worked. Invest in MLSE stock if you want to get a return on your investment, it will come than waiting for a Cup.

  2. Stop crying and enjoy that this team makes the playoffs , these has beens and never wheres have to stop with all this crying and shit calling just watch the games and enjoy eh πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  3. The Leafs are still too much the same team as before, at least with respect to the AM34-Marner-Nylander-Morgan Rielly-Tavares quintet. Vs the MN Wild the 1st 3 members of that quintet, unlike any then-teammate of theirs, put up a point in the ONLY goal the Leafs had scored in that game.

    Last regular season the Leafs:
    – played 21 games during which they'd scored under 3 goals, with a win-regulation-loss-OT loss-shootout loss record in such games:
    — in October of 0–3–1–0
    — in November of 1–1–0–1 (cumulative: 1–4–1–1)
    — in December of 0–3–0–0 (cumulative: 1–7–1–1)
    — in January of 2–2–0–0 (cumulative: 3–9–1–1)
    — in February of 0–2–0–0 (cumulative: 3–11–1–1)
    — in March of 1–3–0–0 (cumulative: 3–14–1–1)
    — April of 0–2–0–0
    — from October to April of 3–16–1–1, bad enough for a 19¹⁄₂₁ points %
    – played 26 games that'd featured games on consecutive calendar days Eastern Time, going 13–10–3–0 in such games
    – had 2 goalies with 2 or more wins by the end of October although hopefully Joe Woll, should he this season get to play another relevant game, will get his 2nd win in the next game that he starts if he doesn't in a game in which he otherwise gets to play (because Tony Stolarz or some other non-Stolarz goalie is pulled)

    This regular season the Leafs:
    – among goalies they've used, only have had ONE (Stolarz) with multiple wins or even consecutive ones, making me wonder if Stolarz will be overplayed as 3 seasons ago Thatcher Demko was with the Canucks, leading to a near-3-month injury stint the following season and persistent problems staying healthy since then (ongoing injury stint has meant no playoff, preseason or regular-season game following game 1 of the 2024 Preds-Canucks playoff series)
    – have played 6 games:
    — when they've scored under 3 goals, a 0–5–1–0 record no doubt having dragged them down thru their 1st 14 (6–5–2–0 record)
    — that've involved a sub-24-hour gap between the final whistle of the 1st and puck drop in the 2nd, with a 2–3–1–0 record in such games

All-in-all quite worrying trends. Sure the Leafs may turn things around but I haven't seen enough evidence to prove they'll even see playoff action. Perhaps the Leafs will beat the Bruins and Woll not having to play the Blues before next October, barring a Blues-Leafs Stanley Cup final before then, will mean lots of wins for him and quite a few consecutive ones. Time will still tell given how injury-prone Woll is and 3 starts that've featured 2 with multiple ugly goals allowed in each.

  4. there are NO leaders on the team. just passengers who are more into their clothing and insta-loser than putting in a 60 min effort game in and game out. nothing is going to change until they get rid of marner because now way they get rid of matthews. berube is now figuring out who actually runs the team. and its sure as shit not the coach. they fucked up by keeping keefe and marner after the absolute disaster that was the habs melt down. i stopped watching as a fan since 74 because they do not deserve my time. oh btw…making the playoffs is NOT guaranteed

  5. What is Jamie talking about? Goaltending is not the issue at the moment. Blinders on Jamie. Depth, Commitment to a new style and adjustment are the culprits.

  6. This team is marginally worse than the team from last year which is marginally worse than the team from the year before that.
The Captaincy and the coach have way less to do with success of the team than the personnel mix. Maybe this group will be better in the playoffs. We have to wait to see but I don't think they will be better.

  7. The loss against St Louis went head to head but end up losing? Its hard to beat Binnington so you try to beat them on open ice rather than head to head ?

  8. At this point into their career, the 5 core players should be able to adapt.
The changes that have been made on paper management brought in players to help those with the style of play.
Changing the Captain did not make any significance change!
Goaltending has been an improvement on one side and a setback on the other.
I'm waiting for one of the 5 core players or two to be benched ! Taken off the Power Play! The top two lines to broken up!
Waiting for the accountability to be consistent and not just for a chosen few!
