  1. Ref I don't mind by the contract but I don't want to lose the roster spot for a FA, Rule 5, or Prospect but Pivetta is ridiculous for $21M half the starters in the league make half of that and he's not worth the risk of getting the draft pick this will be a huge mistake. No other team is giving up a draft pick for Pivetta so even if he doesn't take the QO we aren't going to get a pick and he's 100% signing that contract.

  2. They are fishing for a draft pick with that choice of giving Nick this offer. Maybe they are going to sign him to a longer term.Thank goodness they kept Rob.

  3. The Pivetta thing only works if he signs elsewhere. Big risk to take to make sure you pick up a draft pick to compensate when you sign another player with a QO attached.

Another topic: I saw a report that the Sox are going to offer a one year contract to Chris Martin. Did that happen?

  4. For what it’s worth, Frankie Montas declined his 20M mutual option earlier today and he was even worse than Pivetta last year. I think that’s some indication of how hot the market will be for starting pitchers. I still don’t love the gamble on pivetta but the Sox might be able to make out with a comp pick here. 🤞

  5. REFSNYDER makes sense. Totally understand and it's a good move. I don't understand Pivetta he just was not that good and no where near worth 21 million that's crazy. Does make you wonder about offseason

  6. I would have preferred Anthony and/or Campbell over Refsnyder and O'Neill (cheaper too!). Though Pivetta is not terrible, (Only strikeout/power pitcher on the team) but I'm surprised they gave him a qualifying offer.

  7. This is a head scratcher. 12 out of 13 names on that list are no brainers……….this one doesn’t make much sense unless there’s more to it. Red Sox have resources to improve the club in the form of money available under the luxury tax and assets that are available to trade. Every move needs to be evaluated based on whether or not it makes the team better. This doesn’t seem to make the club better unless there’s another shoe to drop that makes retaining Pivetta more important than it appears.

  8. Pivetta has some very good underlying numbers. xFIP the past two years he's been around 3.5, which is top 20 in baseball. Granted, he's always underperformed that metric so grain of salt. His K%-BB% is even better and would have been 9th in baseball if he qualified. The HRs are a big problem, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a solid year for him in '25 and pitching is expensive!

  9. Don't worry, Corbin, the objective is to pick up a draft pick. Pavetta is going to opt for free agency. I'm sure he wants a mult year deal. Whoever is interested will have to offer more than $21 million. That's not a lot inn today's market.
I'm pleased to hear Rufschnider is signing for another year.

  10. This is a really bad move from the Red Sox. The top brass has not earned any credibility from this move, but like you said. It could well be a genius move. I have a bad feeling about this.

  11. I trust Breslow knows what he's doing. Even if Pivetta accepts, his WHIP the last two years is 1.12. K rate around 11 per 9. How many SPs can top that? Not many. Clearly other teams like TB, like him. Wouldn't be shocked if he's on the verge of a career year. One thing I've noticed about fans: they always think players on other teams are better than the ones in house. That isn't always the case.

  12. One thing by this move is the Breslow off-season got easier. All three baseball gurus on MLBTRADERUMORS predict that Pivetta will take their QO offer. Pivetta has averaged 2.3 WAR the last four years. Does he deserve the RS QO? No, it is a slight overpay, but you are slightly exaggerating the cost/risk. If they could get a free B round draft pick great, but a 2 or 3 million overpay for Pivetta isn't the end of the world either. 1. Breslow has to make fewer decisions 2. Few on your podcasts have to try predict the trade possibilities for Abreu/others. The RS could go super aggressive without a ton of money involved.

  13. Holy cow! This must be an indication of what starting pitching is going to command. I agree Corbin, with the thought process of Kutter Crawford being packaged with a few prospects to bring in a young starter. Pivetta is viewed as a bridge. I know Nick pefers to stay in Boston…..insightful video Corbin

  14. Refsnyder definitely not a surprise Pivetta really doesn't make sense. MLB Network floated an idea they could trade a starter like Houck or Crawford or maybe they will keep the same pitching staff. This makes no sense. Breslow is going to have to explain this one. I'm likely going to stop giving Breslow the benefit of the doubt. There's got to be some reason for this your explanation does make some sense.

  15. This is awful news..Why would another team give up a draft pick for signing Pivetta? He's a back end starter at best that you should be able to get for free in free agency…Why the risk of getting stuck with him? We already have a plethora of 4 plus era guys who get hit hard!! The only way this makes sense is if we can trade nick and get a prospect for him but even there the team will end up eating money…The idea is we need BETTER starting pitching,,not filling the team with 4's and 5's….We need ONES AND TWOS RIGHT NOW!!!

  16. I'm going to throw a wrinkle into this…News is Shane Bieber may not be ready until June….Could they possibly be bringing back Pivetta to hold the fort at the spot in the rotation until Bieber is ready if Breslow is looking at Bieber?? Deep thought,I know but hey.

  17. Pivetta has made less then 18 million in his Career, maybe I'm an idiot but who wouldn't push back a multi year contract for 21 million I would sign that in about 5 seconds. I Do Not think he is worth 21 Million

  18. Years ago the sox made a qualifying off to a player that they didn't think would take it and he did. Trying to member. It was an infielder, I think they picked him up for a playoff run but didn't really need him next season. Man I can't remember his name or the year ….this is going to dive me crazy

  19. Rob .940 ops vs lefties enough said…the Pivetta thing is absolutely disturbing..21 million dollars? For Pivetta ? It has to be they don’t think he will take it….if he takes it this is absolutely freaking horrible and stupid and a very bad sign for this off season. Paying Pivetta 21 million in any scenario is absolutely insane!…he has a 4 year 60 million dollar predicted value on sportstrac which is insane as well

  20. Is this a joke? $20 mil + for Pivetta? Can this organization get any more ridiculous? Miss out on plenty of talent because they won't pay but then give him 3x what he was making to be barely average? Wtf

  21. If kutter crawford is traded in a package for someone big (Rooker?) I'm cool with this. Otherwise Breslow is on a trajectory to be worse than Chaim Bloom.
