LA Dodgers Reported to Sign Roki Sasaki

Fresh off their World Series victory, the Los Angeles Dodgers could land arguably the best pitcher on the market if he becomes available this offseason. Per ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel, the Dodgers are “heavily favored” to land Japanese star Roki Sasaki as “indications” are the Chiba Lotte Marines will post him for MLB clubs. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported in August that Sasaki was “likely” to renew his request with the NPB club to post him this offseason, but it was unclear if they would acquiesce because it’s financially beneficial to them to wait.

  1. It's BS folks….all cause the league let LA defer Ohtani $$$. Deferment is ok but damn near the whole salary.?????? GTFO.

And this is why baseball is dying folks!!! Look at WS ratings JUST HORRIBLE for a big market west coast vs east coast series. We've had much much bigger draws!

  2. Not 100% buying Sasaki is getting posted. He might ultimately get posted, but as of right now. all the rumors are coming from the state side. Kiley McDaniel’s article is about his prediction of the offseason. There haven’t been any reports from Japan the Chiba Lotte Marines will post him.

  3. roki declining to sign a new contract with the marines mean very little. it just means that he can’t play baseball in japan or us (and perhaps other leagues as well) until he signs a new contract with the marines.

i think marines fans want him to stay and people in japan at large are either indifferent or split on whether they want to see him in mlb early, so it really doesn’t make sense to let him go now. maybe an equivalent would be for the padres to place jackson merrill on an unconditional release waiver. and u can probably argue that it’s even worse than that given the magnitude of the potential posting fee in the future. that’s how irrational it would be for the marines if they were to post him now.

roki is under team control until the end of 2028 season. npb free agency is after 9 years for high school grads, and 8 years for college, etc. the lotte marines would not want to post him until 1 year remaining in the contract, i.e. 2028 season. or 2027 at the earliest (he just turned 23 and a npb player is not ellgible for a major league contract until 25).

the current posting system is structured in a way that teams have very little incentive to post their star players until they are elligible for major league free agent contracts in the mlb, or age 25. keep in mind ohtani’s posting fee for his minor league contract was grandfathered from the prior system and nippon ham got $20m. npb team owners are generally corporations and not individuals so they have a fiduciary duty. in the case of roki, it’s Lotte.

also, if roki wants to maximize his contract dollars, he would need to wait until 2029 season.

also, not sure why people keep talking about who has more international slot money. these are players coming from the “majors” of another league. they are not high school grads. 1-2 million dollar difference mean very little to them.

  4. First off Soto is a liability in the field – as shown in the WS. Next, why would Yabnkees pay him $700 M? Dodgers smoked the Yankees – that Yankee team will never beat LA in a WS. SO why pay $700 M to at best lose in the WS?
