Montreal Canadiens lose with more positives, is Marty St Louis getting a failing grade, Habs mailbag

The Montreal Canadiens have lost yet another game, but we are continuing to draw positives from the losses. In our first segment, we discuss the Habs’ play against the Devils and talk about what worked and what didn’t, spending some time on Alex Newhook’s night. We talked about the top line, goaltending, and more. In our second segment, we single out Mike Matheson, who definitely could have played better in that game, and then Brendan Gallagher, who seems determined to drag the Canadiens back in a positive direction, no matter what.   2. On the second goal, Guhle was under pressure but had the puck on his back hand because he is playing on his wrong side. Would have been stronger had the puck been on the opposite side on his natural side. Had Gallagher up the boards but pass did not get there. Need to get Guhle playing on the left hand side in a year or two if not sooner. Playing with Matheson does not help as he is not strong in his own end. On the third goal, we had 3 Habs in the corner versus 2 Devils. Guess who got the puck and passed to a wide open Sigenthaler. Hutson had the puck behind the net after a great defensive play on a 3v1. Tough but another turnover. Neither goal has anything to do with the Hybrid system. Turn the puck over or lose puck battles in your own end and it does not generally turn out well. 4th goal Heineman misses the net from a prime spot in the slot. Hutson down low anticipating a pass. Missed shot results in a 2v1 involving Jack Hughes. Devils do not miss. So it is isolated mistakes that are hurting the Habs. Habs. Also hurt by the #1 line being invisible tonight. Need goals from them but not producing 5v5.

  3. Everyone needs to chill another top ten pick will be good but another top five pick will be excellent 😊
    People forget that when Avs were rebuilding and had a setback season they ended up with Makar patients all nobody would bat an eye if management hadn’t said they wanted to be in the mix 😂

  4. Players learn or should learn how to body check at a very young age. If you have to teach body checking technique to an NHL player then they are not an NHL player. I think the Habs are soft. They fly by or use their sticks a lot instead of using their bodies to separate players from the puck. It is more an attitude and mindset. I get the NHL is a tough league and often players play with bumps and bruises. Teams that are soft tend to finish in the bottom quartile in goals against.

  5. I completely agree with what Laura said about them not being aggressive (around the 6:57 ish mark). Funnily enough I think the place they've been most likely to be aggressive is on the PK, which is hilarious

  7. MSL is fine for this team, 2 issues i have with him: overplays vets everygame, why on earth are they playing 5 LH, LD? makes no sense. Guhle is garbage on RD paired with matheson, on the ice for 2,3,4 goals every game. Trade matheson and get a RD. 2nd major problem is they have no talent, they have a 2nd line, and 3 4th lines, Guhle might be a top pair guy with the partner, matheson is a 4 on most teams, hutson is a 2nd pair guy. It's a rebuild, the habs have lacked talent for so long fans don;t realize how bad the roster is; demidov is there best talent in 20 years and he is in russia, hage looks good so far, have promising d pieces who aren;t nhl ready yet. Fans have 2 more years of pain. By then, MSL will be a better coach or he won;t be, then changes to coaching will happen, patience
