RANKING: Who Has The Most Trade VALUE For The Chicago Cubs?

Sam ranks his top 10 most valuable assets in the Chicago Cubs organization. He discusses the players he believes are worth the most long term. This idea came from Bill Simmons at the Ringer who does an NBA trade value column every year (link below). Sam discusses what these rankings say about the organization and finishes up with Best/Worst of the week.

  1. I don’t fully understand why people look at Busch’s season and view it as reflective of his ceiling. He was essentially a rookie this past season, the same as PCA. We look at PCA’s season in the context of being a rookie and feel like he showed a lot of great development in certain areas, but Cubs fans generally don’t look at Busch through that same lens.

  2. I’m a Nico fan. He’s cheap and gives you over 4 wins. Great defender, Base runner and makes solid contact. There’s a reason Assad and Taillon have over performed their peripherals with that middle infield defense.

  3. You have to ask yourself who would teams be asking for first when calling. based on their years of control, and cost. I'm sorry Shaw is not the 2nd most coveted player by other teams. It would go PCA, Steele, then maybe Imanaga or Smith (due to huge upside on Smith)

  4. Interesting analysis. I think you’re undervaluing Busch by a few notches, but otherwise don’t necessarily disagree. I do hope they don’t trade Busch, and am anxious for a full season of PCA and to see what Shaw can do in the bigs.

  5. Great podcast Sam. You came up with a very creative and interesting topic. The methodology you described makes a lot of sese. I cannot find fault with your ratings. This will be a huge off season for Jed. For a big bat in FA, I would focus on Bregman. I would trade Hoerner or Paredes for a catching prospect. I really hope they don't deal Shaw, Horton, or Cassie. I think Triantos has some decent value.

  6. Parades & Nico as honorable mentions is a stretch mate… (Brown & Horton given injuries last season are not higher than them) Concerns about injury or performance for these guys barely takes anything away from their value cuz given both those things Hoerner & Parades still had a good year of above average baseball for their positions & the league.
& an underpaid contract for both with multiple years of control. (Parades has 4 years at 6 million as it is & YOUR feelings on him dont hurt his value just your opinion of him. Wasnt a catastrophe season for Isaac just a down one. That's an easy sell to the right teams) there's no way these 2 should be outside the top 10.

  7. Buschy will hit 30 homers this year. Book it. Look at his stats for every year in the minors and at every level. He hit well the first year but lit it up in subsequent. I know this kid…..he's a gamer at whatever he plays !
