Personally, I find the rumblings of the Mets signing Adames to be strange, especially at the reported 7 Year $160M offer. I’ve seen a good amount of people in the community convinced that the Mets can sign Adames, Alonso, & Soto; I find that difficult to believe, as I see Adames as a potential Alonso replacement, in the lineup. With Adames at 3B, Vientos would become the primary 1B and/or DH. Also, if recent reports are correct, and Boras is looking for a 5 Year $125M deal for Pete, I don’t see how the Mets would not offer that. The Mets have plenty of infield options for 3B via their minor league system; therefore, if the Mets do sign Adames (this is a huge if) then it’s almost guaranteed that the Mets have a big trade incoming with some of their minor league players with can include Baty, Mauricio, Acuna, Jett, Rodriguez, Baez, Vargas, & Reimer. I personally predict the Mets sign Soto and re-sign Alonso, and I see Adames signing with the Dodgers or the Braves to be the primary SS.

You’re not wrong. But this has already been shut down multiple times.
2021 is ancient history. If you do the same comparison for 2024, Adames performed much better than Pete.
Pete was better in 2021 and 2022. But I’m afraid that version of Pete is no longer available. You never know, he might regain his old form, even after age 30. But the smart money says he won’t.
Similar risks with Adames – he has had some weaker years and might revert. But his trend line looks more favorable than Pete’s.
As much as it would hurt me to see Pete go from a sentimental standpoint, I’m not opposed to them acquiring a 3rd baseman to strengthen the defense while (hopefully) not losing much offense. That being said I just don’t see Adames as that guy.
Let’s not move people to unnatural positions, especially in the infield. We just need to look across town and see how that worked out,
Fuck signing Adames. Nothing against him personally, but there’s no way I’d rather have him than Pete. An extra 6 steals a year does not make up for the power difference. You can think Pete’s less likely to perform well in the next 5 years, but I’ll roll the dice to keep the Polsr Bear.
Corner infield power? Pete
Playing in position? Pete
Inventor of LFGM? PETE
So you sign Adames. Lindor doesn’t move, and Adames hasn’t even said he’s open to moving to 3B yet. Then you’d move Vientos to 1B. I don’t need 2 guys out of position on the same infield (and we don’t even know the long term play at 2B yet). Pete was cold for a long time before the playoffs, but he woke up when needed and the Milwaukee HR is the greatest Mets moment of my life. Loyalty is worth something.
Call me naive if you wish, but there is value to winning with “my guys”, and I’m willing to lose with them, too. If I’m Cohen/Stearns, I tell Pete “here’s 5/125, and if anyone is willing to pay you more then you bring me their offer and I will beat it”.
Adames literally makes no sense and he’s an awful buy and the exact type of player who will age horribly.
Vientos isn’t as awful defensively as originally thought and with our organization is full of 3B prospects including a potential stud in Baez who will be in AA at 20 years old.
Hard pass
I’ve always preferred big meat to a little Willy but that’s just me
You do realize a million other more reputable reporters have said that report was bullshit. I appreciate the work but you probably don’t have to worry about it.
That said I agree that I would prefer to keep Alonso especially if Adames can’t play short
In a vacuum, an argument exists that Adames has more value going forward than Alonso.
For the Mets, I think you’d be better off keeping a power bat that anchors the middle of the lineup, and a positive clubhouse guy who wants to stay, than adding middle infielder who is an unknown to the team and asking them to change positions.
Por que no los dos?
Ok but what about 23 and 24?
I have nothing intelligent to say but I just wanted to comment that the picture of Adames is funny next to the picture of Pete. Pete, do you need a nap? 🙁
(I say this as someone who doesn’t smile for pics either but if I saw myself compared to a smiling person like this I would probably think the same thing)
We’re not getting Adames. I’d guess his agent put that story out there to drive up the Dodgers offer.
I thought it was proven that the Mets aren’t actively going after Adames though?
Anything is possible, depends on how much luxury tax Uncle Steve wants to spend.
I’m starting to think that all of our infield prospects are going to be used as trade bait for starting pitching.
Pic- not up to date on pete. Hes clean shaven. But yet. Smile more petey. We luv ya
We offered Pete $158 for 7 years and he passed. Adames gives us a more all around player that plays a premium defensive position and mitigates risk if there are injuries on the infield for $160 mil for 7 years.
I’d take Adames over Pete for defensive flexibility.
I’d Move vientos over to first for a player of this quality.
I think acquiring Adames is a waste of capital. We have a glut of infield prospects. I’d prefer they either resign Alonso or trade for a first baseman and play Vientos at third base. Hopefully, Vientos’ 2024 wasn’t a rookie fluke, and he’ll successfully adjust to the inevitable league adjustment to him. What the Mets need to concentrate on this offseason is adding an offensive bat to buttress the middle of the line up and add pitchers to the rotation and bullpen.
we also know alonso can play in new york. it would be a mistake to let him go.
“First baseman outhits shortstop, and tune in for other unsurprising news at 10.”
This comparison really only makes sense if Pete Alonso wakes up tomorrow with the athleticism to play SS/3B. Don’t get me wrong, I’d much rather have Alonso than Adames for a laundry list of reasons, but the WAR figure at the top explains exactly why they’re getting discussed at somewhat similar price points in the market. Different positions have different skill expectations, both offensively and defensively.
