Penguins humbled again on Thursday, will try to rebound on Friday

The Pittsburgh Penguins got humbled in a 5-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night and Hunter is here to break it all down. He starts with the play of Erik Karlsson and how he had a horrendous effort, especially in the first period. He breaks down the first two goals, which were awful reads from him. He discusses how it’s not close to good enough and how Mike Sullivan appears to have had enough of some of his play, based on his post-game presser. He also discusses how Alex Nedeljkovic didn’t play well enough before previewing Friday’s game against the Washington Capitals. Hunter looks at how the Caps have played this year and how this one presents another challenge for a Penguins team that really needs to get back into the win column. Finally, Hunter ends the show with some thoughts on the first month of the NHL season.

  1. I think more of what the Capitals have done, you'll see more of that this year from the Penguins. I think during last year, Kyle Dubas realized this team is nowhere close to being a contender, which led to the decision to deal Guentzel. Your probably going to see the same scenario this year with Pettersson, Eller, and maybe even Rakell to an extent.

You said earlier this week Hunter, the Penguins are not showing the front office they can contend, so Dubas strategy is probably going to really go into effect of trading off veterans who are going to be UFA's or other veterans having a resurgence for some younger assets.

  2. Penguins need to throw rust on the 2nd line with doc and eller when he is healthy. Keep that first line together and build a little more fire power into the second line. I do think they could use a little puck luck at this point but you also create your own luck. I do like the way they have been playing parts of the last few games but man it seems impossible for them to play a full 60 minutes. Any chance the Penguins pick up a 2c? I heard Duby was scouting the preds.

  3. Caps basically skipped a rebuild with their offseason moves. Team is so much younger and faster, and tons of almost NHL ready kids in Hershey. Super impressive, unfortunately 😅

  4. The offense deserves just as much criticism as Ned and Karlsson on a night like tonight. They are not paid to boost expected goals or shot totals. They are paid to score.
O'Connor pointless in 9. It was his completely unnecessary giveaway that fed Carolina's transition on the 1st goal. 0.88 5v5 P/P60 on the season. By what right is he averaging 13:34 at even-strength this season? Earth to Sullivan? He's -13 on the year. Not getting it done anywhere but the PK, and that's not good enough for a lineup spot. Beauvillier's not worth a spot either.
Bunting has been trash too but at least he's busting his balls to score now, and it'll probably turn around soon.
Letang 2 5v5 points on the year. Dude had 36 last year. Not one point from Graves or St. Ivany.

  5. I feel sorry for anyone going to the Commanders' stadium. It will always be FedEx to me and it will always be the worst stadium in the NFL until they demo it.

  6. Bunting looked good no matter who he was on the ice with.
Ned being Ned. Pens had 36 Shots On Goal. The Canes had 18 Shots On Goal. Ned got blown away by a Hurricane of 18 shots! Kochetkov made 35 saves. Seriously Ned only made 13 saves. Is Jarry ready?
    Ned's save % on the season. .722%, .885%, .882%, .880%, .861%, .962% and .957%. Also had a high save % down the stretch last season.
Ned is .883% on the season with a .722% vs the Canes. YIKES.

  7. With Geno on Sid's wing, how good would Mikael Granlund look now at 2nd line center?
    Mikael Granlund: 15GP/6G/10A/16Pts
    Evgeni Malkin: 15GP/4G/12A/16Pts Crosby: 15GP/6G/9A/15Pts
Last season Granlund was a playmaker on a "CORE" level. Crosby: 82GP/52A, Granlund: 69GP/48A, EK65: 82GP/45A, Letang: 82GP/41A, Malkin: 82GP/40A. Granlund vs Geno. Granlund: 69GP/60Pts, Malkin: 82GP/67Pts. Granlund's contract is up after this year. EK65 has 3 years left.
As you can see with Granlund's numbers in San Jose, EK65 was a "San Jose mirage".
P.S. Granlund in Pittsburgh under Sullivan: 21GP/1G/4A/5Pts
EK65 went from 1st in goals/25, assists/76 and points/101 by defenseman in San Jose to out of the top 10 in goals, assists, and points under Sully. 11G/45A/56Pts YIKES! Granlund/EK65 are a San Jose mirage.

  8. The pens did double canes up in shots but when a team is up 4 goals on you they tend to clear the puck more then shoot it. The canes are hands down the better team which is a lil surprising. Thought they would take a step back this season but actually may be better then last season. The caps game tonight was pretty evenly played. Pens had a good 1st period, lousy 2nd but great 3rd period. Blomqvist was outstanding tonight. The reason the penguins won. Karlsson was karlsson. Goal and assist but on ice for both goals against from non other the odd man rushes. They finally beat a good team this season. Now see if they can do it again monday vs dallas
