Any chance a mystery team lands him?

  1. If he’s posted under 2024 it is near 100% that he’s a Dodger. If he’s posted under 2025 then I assume these are the top candidates:

1A) Dodgers. West Coast, International Pool cash, can defer salary, already have Ohtani and Yamamoto to ease transition, and with their pitching staff he would not be required to exceptionally ramp of his innings immediately.

1B) Padres. West coast, most International cash in 2025, Sasaki is close to Yu Darvish, would be willing to spend to keep him off the Dodgers.

    2) Mets. Really only here because Cohen would possibly be willing to outbid anyone else just because he can.

    3) Cubs. Imanaga and Suzuki could help with the transition. They have been heavily scouting Japan and Korea, presumably to build the franchise brand in Asia.

I’m sure at least two dozen other teams will attempt to be in the mix, but realistically he goes to one of the those four teams. The only one that wouldn’t be a complete shock to me is Baltimore.

  2. If mlb really wants to take advantage of the Japanese market they’d push him to join another team.

  3. The only caveat is if they can’t get him posted before the 2024 period closes on December 15. Then other teams come into play cause they have more money. If he’s posted by then, he’s a Dodger.

  4. Welcome to the Savannah Bananas!

Can’t get any more mystery than that.. (maybe the Party Animals)

  5. I hope Blue Jays gets him. Our bullpen sucks. This guy averaged 100+ mph in Japan vs. Mexico WBC game.

  6. Sure, every team in MLb had a shot.

But dodgers have the international signing pool, the location, the quality team and the established Japanese market.

Kind of hard to beat that stacked deck

  7. The Yankees should not expect any good Japanese players to join after celebrating Ohtani’s injury. Pretty much all younger generations in Japan look up to him. Not that long ago, Tanaka left NY early because his son was getting racially bullied, too. Toxic fanbase, people, and even the kids are toxic there.

  8. I can’t think of any sport that’s had a superteam built mostly of mercenaries, who’ve had a prolonged dynasty. When the Doyers get him, it’s going to be even more fun watching that team be a one and done.
