Bruins Fall Flat in Ullmark Return | Bruins Game 16 Recap
The Boston Bruins lost 3-2 in overtime to the Ottawa Senators last night. The Senators outplayed the Bruins all night, and the Bruins had no answer for the Seantor’s forecheck.
Jeremy Swayman is the only reason the Bruins get a point out of this game and somehow move up in the standings after a loss.
Jim Montgomery seemed to have no answers after the game and sounded defensive for the first time.

something weird happens at the end of the video, my apologies
"He could have made a sandwich" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪🥪
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an entire period without a shot on goal. This team is in need of an exorcism at this point. I think Monty’s days are numbered and if I’d be sitting your $$ men and call up some young guys at least they want to be there and can show some ❤
The PP they had at the ending of the 2nd period was “insane!” It went to Zacha who didn’t shoot and passed it to McAvoy who also didn’t shoot passed it back to Zacha who (again) didn’t shoot passed it back to McAvoy who mishandled the puck and Ottawa clears it. They need to stop “expecting” a clear line and stop passing too much. The 1st period was great. The 2nd went to crap. The 3rd went to hell. There is no reason whatsoever to not get a shot on net in 24:08 minutes. Hell, the OT took :28 seconds. I understand on certain things for blaming the coach, but how can you blame him with the players he has who can’t shoot never mind score. It wouldn’t have mattered who he put together in that 3rd period. No one played worth a damn.
This season is cooked like a Christmas goose. Not sure what the issues are, but it's too late to fix them now. I'll keep up to date with the team by following Bruins Diehards religiously 😂. Keep up the good work.
The players say they have to play better and they don't. The coach said he does not have the answers. Zero shots on goal in the 3rd period. And nothing changes ….. Good luck thinking that this team will turn it around. Something very wrong with this team. This is all very disappointing, glad I do not have season tickets.
I was at this game and it was so emotional to see Ully back home 😢. Jimbo I think has to go, NHL head coach is a hard job!
Third period was awful, but this game was winnable in OT, except for Swiss Cheese Swayman, who showed us .. once again .. how much he's really worth.
I dont like zadorov, he seems like he is just doing what he wants because he wont face any punishment for his poor decision making and stupid penalties. We were warned ahead of time he doesnt seem to be receptive to coaching, hence the whole moving from team to team. He needs to be a healthy scratch for a game or two to send a message. He probably wont , cause he makes a lot of money and he would be pissed, but it should be what needs to happen.
I mean 16 games in and you have a 3rd period, at home, with no shots, against Ottawa? A 500 record or a little above does not cut it in the league anymore. They need to make moves quick. I hate to flat out blame a coach but you cant get rid of the amount of players under performing on this team. If a coach is unable to get his players to perform to their potential, he has to go. You can not afford in this day and age to wait and see if things turn around. If this coach produces that type of effort from his players in a tied 3rd period against a division opponent, I think that speaks volumes.
The fact that Montgomery is not gone leads me to believe they are hoping to snag Sullivan when he becomes available. Quenneville is out there but I’m guessing too much baggage. Sacco interim?
The B's seem to be in training camp mode. I'm not sure if it is the constant line changes or new players, but they are not passing the eye test. They still look like they don't have a center for the top 2 lines (by how they are playing, not on paper). I hope they can just hover near the playoffs to figure things out and then go on a streak at the end of the season and into the playoffs.
Monty has lost the room, Pasta is clearly going through the motions. Now I don't put last night's loss on Swayman but he still is over paid. To not get a shot on net on the 3rd is pathetic. They don't shoot. Time for big changes. I hope Sweeney is happy with the crap he has assembled. Trade Frederic if you can he clearly is playing with no confidence. Brutal season to this point
Montgomery is in complete denial. He is seriously saying he doesn't go to the blender very often?!?? What reality is he living in? His continuous line juggling is a huge part of the problem. Lack of talent being the other. This should be a team that's fighting for a wild card but at this rate the playoffs could be just wishful thinking.
I've been bitching about Montgomery's line mixing since game 5 against Fla 2 years ago. Putting Bergeron on the 3rd line. I imagined Montgomery thinking to himself "Gee, we have an elimination game, can knock the Panthers out. We've had a historic season with wins and points. Hey I know, let's switch up the lines!". I told all my friends (mostly all Leafs fans) to put their money on Florida because right there the Bruins just gave away the series.
Monty seems clueless when it comes to line construction. Say what you will about Cassidy but there is no way in hell he would have ever put Bergeron on the 3rd line to start a playoff game. As I said before, I'm done with Monty.
Yep -your breakdown sounds like exactly what I heard and saw in highlights.
Radio announcer Bob Beers sounded like he was at a funeral for half the game. He wasn't sugar coating it. Even thought the Bruins might have gotten away with a few infractions that refs didn't call.
you nailed the reason the game is in chaos and slowed down.. They're thinking too much. Not playing on instinct.
We've been riding this wave for the last few seasons that has very little substance to it
What goes up must come down
And at this point? They're not having fun.
We've been avoiding this rebuild for at least two seasons.
I don't blame Sweeney for going all-in two seasons ago, when he brought in bertuzzi, hathaway, wish we could've kept Orlov.
He believed in that group as there was no reason not to.
I have to start questioning our scouting & player development at this point. We've been landing in top of the standings so we're not getting those top draft picks. scouting often makes up for that.
But I have seen the NHL trying to get control over every league and all players so that might be getting more difficult.
But, here it is..
The price of keeping bergeron, krejci & going all in that season
Kept dragging Bergeron back, brought Krejci back, tried bringing rask back, probably sold a lot of tickets and jerseys to make up for the covid loss but
No moving forward with a rebuild
Linus ullmark landing in our laps due to a Buffalo sabers fire sale, was pure dumb luck. That covered a lot of regular season disasters that could have happened the past 2 years.
Hart winner Taylor Hall was supposed to be the hot shot from that trade. And it turns out, the guy doesn't like to shoot the puck!
I think he was a bust.
The Bruins where his fifth franchise in 10 years?
That was a swing and a miss
Then Everything was focused on the centennial hype
This past playoffs, we had no business being top of the standings – false playoff berth earned by overtime loss points
And yes, that ridiculous negotiation around our goalie that dragged on, took up all the headlines, brought all that negativity into the club?
I am going to put that on Swayman.
That can't happen again.
Ever.
It's all been right there in front of our faces. Especially for original sixers and older fans.
Here it is.
I don't believe this is the end of the world, Pasta has been known to get 2/3 of his statistics after the holidays
I still think Jake debrusk has a seasonal affective thing where he plays at the beginning of the season and at the end.
And I'm starting to think zacha partly that way.
We've had a very false sense of success over the past three seasons – since Chara left.
And then we left it up to Nick Ritchie to be our only enforcer?
He earned his seventh player award and we traded him
Not a surprise to hear Trent Frederick's name brought up for trade, he just won the 7th player award… That might be a curse!
we're looking at an interesting winter trade deadline.
That might be the real blender!
Thanks for dragging yourself out of bed to do this video.
It's not been a good hockey week for you!
At least you've got a hot shot hockey player that knows how to score!
So you're one up on the rest of us!
My colors won't run
Go Bs!
🐻
can anyone here tell me one time when monty had the answers in his entire tenure in boston ? the record regular season ywo years ago doesn't count cuz of the possible all time worst playoff choke that followed. BTW, the Bs skaters didn't quit in that 7 game series loss to the panthers — monty kept playing an injured goalie and he played a badly injured bergeron, who got rag dolled by the panthers for a minus 6 in three games. right now isn't all monty's fault because the players have failed a gut check over 1/5 th of the season. i like marchand but he is not a prototype NHL captain, and there was nobody else on this soft team. the personal pride and work ethic of hockey players in the NHL has been eroding and catching up with the hot dogs in other sports and apparently it has found it's way to the TD garden. for a while teams across the league would play half assed pond hockey during the regular season and step it up during the playoffs, but now they are quitting during the regular season, too.
The fanatical devotion to size has cost the Bruins. Yes they are looking for hits constantly putting themselves out of position.
The defense keeps backing in allowing grade A scoring chances. Zadorov was not a good signing. Offense is lacking.
Monty won't last long. He's toast.
Zadorov was a bad signing, everyone thought he was the second coming of chara…
I still don’t understand the ullmark trade it made no sense at all.
Swayman is playing as good as he can with crappy slow penalty ridden defense in front of him.
The biggest issue i have with Monty is his coaching mentality of quality over quantity of shots. Not having a single shot in the 3rd is on the coach plain and simple.
The ot goal swayman got caught cheating to the pass and he knew it as soon as the shot was released and he skated off.
My mind is blown that sweeny is out scouting for anything. But i guess when you make millions you can do what you want.
Montgomery's shift changes and shift pairings are causing losses. Even the NESN commentators talked about it. It feels like Sweeney is getting involved, but I don't know if that is good or bad at this point.
I am sick to my stomache. I love monty and the bruins. They just need some offense! Sweeney will fix this.
gerry cheevers would have said of this team, " they couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag. " this team is short on balls, pride, work ethic, and coaching.
I don’t think the team is built right. I think you said this that they were built for punishment…laying out hits. They were caught flat footed many times. So they can’t play the way Montgomery wants them to play. The blame goes on the head office, Management, that gave Montgomery potatoes and all he can make is French fries 🍟. The team needs a little bit of everything and this team doesn’t and it’s not Montgomery fault. Thanks for your take and breakdown much appreciated ❤❤
Too many passengers on this team. Underperforming players not contributing anything to the team at this point. Change is definitely needed. Not one SOG in any period is unacceptable nevermind a home game.
Maybe if the Bruins spent less time hugging and kissing each other and their opponents they would win more games.
Paging Joel Quenneville …
Fire Monty!!!
Bunch of individuals. Horrible chemistry and no responsibility
Montgomerys seat is getting hot.
More consistent with the line. Be serious. No consistency. The entire year has been a blender. How can the have consistency when they never play to get her.
These player just don’t click together – scapegoat Montgomery but I don’t think it makes them score more goals and commit less penalties
One ice talent not the problem, players not responding to the coach for for whatever reason does not matter. Replace the coach sooner the better..
Look, as long as the forwards can’t even put the puck on net for years at a time, don’t even try to blame this on Zadorov. His physical play has been one the bright spots. Swayman is doing his job. And this is the same coach they had when they broke the regular season record for most wins. The forwards are getting outworked. Montgomery can’t get on the forecheck himself. But go ahead, fire the coach. That’s all you know how to do, anyway.
Like it or not, this team lost more than just some talent in the offseason. They lost chemistry and it’s showing every game. There are a lot of new faces and I think it’s doing more harm than good. Add to it that Zadorov was a particularly bad signing. Yeah, he’s big but looks lost and makes bad plays and takes bad penalties. The power play is a guaranteed dud and the penalty kill might be salvageable. And no shots in the third AT HOME?! Embarrassing is just one of many words that comes to mind. I’m beginning to think Sweeney and his offseason bargain shopping is going to ruin this team.
The list for blame is to long, the problem areas is longer.
The team sucks, time for a fire sale. It really hurts to admit this but our run of success is over
I legit napped through the 3rd period but holy heck? I'm never gonna change lines or coaches but…idk? something feels off? Pasta? blame game? edit I love Freddie
This wasn't even all on the Bruins. Although the score didn't reflect, the sens played a surprisingly good game and made us look foolish. Not to mention Brady Tkachuk had 12 shots and 8 hits like come on man, you gotta keep him in check ALL game.
(Note: Some of the details below are not 100% correct because I'm sort of ranting right now, and I'm just trying to put some things in perspective for us.)
Compare this team to last year's team.
This year after 16 games we are 7-7-2. Last year we were 13-1-2. Which players did we have last year after 16 games that are gone now?
DeBrusk / Heinen / Van Reimsdyk / Ullmark
What players do we have this year that we didn't have last year after 16 games?
Korpisalo / Zadorov / Elias Lindholm / Peeke
On paper, which of these players are an improvement from last year?
All of them except Korpisalo.
How many games that we lost can we blame Korpisalo for not being as good as Ullmark? Just one game at most. We can say that if we had Ullmark we would be 7-6-3, at best. We can't blame goaltending. We can say that DeBrusk is sorely missed because he was a very fast skater, a great passer, and a great forechecker, but in response to losing DeBrusk, we added Elias Lindholm, which is a substantial upgrade from DeBrusk.
We SHOULD have kept Tyler Bertuzzi, Taylor Hall, and Dmitri Orlov. Bert wanted to stay but Sweeney refused to pay him another $1.75M. I would have been perfectly happy to see them pay Bert $2.5M. Sweeney is a fool for letting Bertuzzi leave. Bert had speed, energy, passion, intelligence, and most of all, he was having a blast. That guy was smiling from ear to ear constantly when he came to Boston. He was playing amazing, and he was a clutch forward that functioned well in high pressure moments. His passes were amazing. His shots were accurate. He acted like the epitome of the Bruin's brand. Taking hockey sticks from opponent players and trying to break them behind the bench, sheering the ice directly on the face of the other goalies to get under their skin and throw them off. He was like Brad Marchand Jr. He had black and gold in his veins and yet Sweeney freaking let him walk. Unreal. We don't need big players, we needed speed up the ice and Bert was an answer for our lack of speed. Then he let Orlov go. A fantastic defenseman, fast on his feet, intelligent and he was a perfect asset because he was very offense minded. He scored in clutch moments, he sent out precise tape to tape passes, and killed it on the blue line during the PP, and he also became a Bruin a heart right away. He also smiled all the time in Boston.
Again… these two were EXACTLY what we needed, and he let them walk.
