Will SF Giants 2025 payroll CUTS actually COST them?

The Giants’ first offseason under Posey is expected to be marked by austerity measures, according to a league source familiar with the team’s plans. The Giants’ adjusted payroll, which accounts for salary that is earned in a given year but not necessarily paid out, is expected to step back from the $206 million they spent last season, when they finished 80-82 while exceeding the luxury tax threshold for the first time since 2018.

Even a modest amount of belt-tightening would leave the Giants with limited resources to spend this offseason — perhaps $30-40 million — beyond their eight players under contract plus the forecasted salaries of four arbitration-eligible players plus pre-arbitration player salaries. Although the Giants are not resolved at present to trade off their major-league roster to create more financial flexibility, they plan to explore it, with arbitration-eligible players like LaMonte Wade Jr. ($4-5 million), Camilo Doval ($3 million) and Mike Yastrzemski ($9-10 million) among the names in play to be moved.

  1. It wont make a difference. The Giants will be the 4th best team in the NL West. Since Farhan took over they should've been doing a rebuild, but Farhan was and is so bad that they screwed that up. It's what happens when you have hire someone who doesn't understand baseball and the business. Buster understands baseball and will surround him with the correct people they will get back under the cap and hopefully not bring back all the ARB garbage that they currently have. Flores, bye, Yaz bye, Wade bye bye Doval bye bye and Rogers get out of here. All the ARB guys are so bad and wouldn't do anything on any other rosters. They are all JV public school player trying to make the West Catholic League Varsity teams… They don't have any business wearing that uniform.

  2. I have faith in Buster, if you look at all the teams he was on for world series champs it was a lot of internal players they drafted who worked their way into the line up, the likes of Cain, Buster, Belt, Crawford, Madbum, and then they added a piece here and there on free agents and trades but they never went after the big name players at that time.

  3. Now that the A's are gone, I'm not going to become a Giants fan, but I'll go to a game or two just to get my fix. One that I definitely want to go to is that first home game against the Dodgers in July. That's going to be a hoot.

  4. Unfortunately not every team can spend as lavishly as the Los Angeles Dodgers… MLB should have a hard SALARY CAP, but doesn't… This useless LUXURY TAX is a joke as it does not trim the Los Angeles Dodgers spending habits…

  5. What I find hilarious is, this is arguably the worst time they could've chosen to start cutting. With the A's out of the Bay Area, this could easily be the time to get the spurned fans (especially considering they CONTRIBUTED to their leaving by outright REFUSING to give up their rights to the San Jose market when the A's had considered a stadium there- which is bad enough, but then gets worse when you remember the A's gave them those rights when they were on the verge of moving in the early 1990s- a dick move on the Giants' part that arguably already mostly killed any potential new fanbase for them there). Yet instead of taking advantage and reasserting themselves as THE Bay Area team, they decide now is the time to start cutting like they're John Fisher throwing a bitch fit.

I remember UrinatingTree offered an analogy about the Twins that could apply here- what's been going in the Bay Area is essentially an entire sports league taking their fanbase and slapping them across the face like they made a GI Jane 2 joke. If i'm in the Bay Area, I wouldn't blame them if they just stopped caring for the sport altogether after all these dick punches. The teams seemed to stop caring about how they felt, so why should THEY return the favor?

  7. 10th overall payroll in 2024. But really – how far low can it get? Definitely won't be 64 million like The Oakland A's. Whatever it may be, much like anything else out there. There are happy groups and unhappy groups about there is no major league competition in the BayArea for the NFL and MLB.

  8. It sure sounds like multiple MLB teams are in some from of financial trouble, 2 teams are 4 sale, the cardinals had to give away free tickets,

  9. For me, I think it all depends how they spend their money this off-season. Getting under the luxury tax makes sense no matter what direction they take. This team isn’t one free agent away from bonafide contention. Giving up draft picks to sign Adames and doing nothing else doesn’t make a ton of sense, nor does the Farhan “spend ~$15M on a bunch of decent veterans” strategy.

And if they cut guys like Yaz, Wade, and Doval without replacing them, that also doesn’t make sense. They just gave Chapman $151M, so penny pinching doesn’t make sense if there’s not a young replacement in-house.

If the 2025 Giants are a playoff team, it’ll be due to a slew of young guys stepping up and solidifying into a core they can build around. Their spending should help the 2025 team be better without saddling the 2026 and beyond team from making splashes when their window of contention is hopefully sustainable.
