[Jeff Passan] Hoerner, Bellinger available in trade

Is trading away a shortstop in a system that lacks shortstops the greatest of ideas? We’d be one Dansby Swanson injury away from disaster at the major-league level.
From the article:
*Nico Hoerner, second baseman: The Cubs don’t have to trade the 27-year-old this winter, but with Matt Shaw big-league-ready, they could use Hoerner to land a starting pitcher. Hoerner’s ability to play shortstop as well is appealing to teams interested in middle-infield help. Another Cub available: Cody Bellinger, who opted into a $27.5 million salary for 2025.”*
They have to move someone. Or it’s going to be the same limp lineup they churned out last year + ?? At catcher.
Would be nice if they could find a taker for Bellinger.
Idk if this is a hot take but find a trade for Suzuki. We need Cody’s left handed bat.
This will be a Jed all timer. Trade Belli and Nico (Good). Trade prospects (bad). Not meet with Soto (bad).
Ownership isn’t interest in doing what it takes to win. Jed thinks he’s some mastermind that can build the next rays team.
I have an idea let’s trade our top two prospects for a mediocre starting pitcher.
Mmmmmm … payroll flexibility.
Trading both those guys makes the most sense. We have PCA. We have other middle infielders to replace Nico. Nico is nice but at the end of the day he’s just another guy who has shown his peak.
Hoerner + prospect(s) to the M’s for Miller or Woo
I’d be sad if Nico got traded
>but with Matt Shaw big-league-ready
Really hate this take – plenty of dudes rake in AAA but then get completely befuddled by pitching in the Majors. The gap between AAA and the Majors is only getting wider.
Oh man, Belli is pretty popular with other mlb players. We better not screw him over
Wouldn’t trade Nico. Shaw should be big league ready but the gap between AAA and the mlb is bigger than ever before. Nico is a great defender, hardly strikes out and would be traded below his value due to that injury likely hurting his offense last year. Belli on the other hand I would trade without second thought.
Use one or the other to grab Vlad. Soto is the ideal, but Santander would be good in RF. Get Burnes. Get a closer.
Nico is this front office personified. Doesn’t do the things that actually win games (slug, walk) but collects WAR because he fields ground balls so people think he’s good. He’s not. He’s the exact mediocre non-factor you have ten of that you should be trying to shed asap.
If it gets you an actual star slugger do it yesterday. But for a starting pitcher? Go buy Max Fried. God I miss Theo.
