Reds decide to opt out of the Diamond sports deal because of bad terms. Braves may drop out despite getting paid their full value. Athletic article. I have a subscription, but I don’t know how the Athletic paywall works. I know NYT has the gift option, but this article did not offer it.

  1. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the Reds would join the ranks of six other teams whose games will be broadcast and produced by Major League Baseball itself in 2025, or whether the Reds will pursue other options. The Reds declined comment.

  2. There’s probably about 3 options available:

    1. Join the other teams who are going directly through MLB. This will probably be the least lucrative but safest option. Would be the easiest for Reds fans to figure out as well.

    2. Go out on their own. If they have a pretty sizable regional market, this could be the most lucrative for them. Would be hard to set up, get the right people in place, and negotiate where all their channel would be found in one offseason though. would probably be the most chaos for Reds fans in 2025.

    3. They could try to join with some of the other Baly cast offs and set up a group deal with a streaming service of some kind. The FanDual group has already worked out something with Amazon, so that may be off the table. Would kind of be in the middle of both the risk and lucrative continuums though.

My best guess, they try to see if they can join in with the other teams on MLB for 2025 only, to buy time to work out one of the other 2 options. I have to feel they eventually try to go on their own, thinking they can make a mini-YES network type of setup. Tough time to be doing that though.

  3. If you do have a subscription to The Athletic, this is the article you saw last Friday. Basically it’s what has since been reported elsewhere, plus some details of the legalities.
