I very much liked the point he made that he goes to morning skates and talks to players afterward to learn more about them. The point isn’t to regurgitate as many random facts as he can, but to drop them in here and there during a game if it is relevant to what is going on in the ice.
His hands are yuge. What soft d-man is he taking about?
Every time I go to a game at MSG, I think “fk, wish I could hear Sam commentate this rn”
The two ‘Rangers’ I’m most attached to. Sam is so obviously just a wonderful person, but two moments from this podcast stood out to me:
1. Sam talking about how many fans have never been to a game and may never go to a game, and his responsibility to capture the important moments big or small inside each game and make them come alive for those at home – no matter if the Rangers are winning or losing.
2. Henrik talking about approaching speaking to the media after games as an opportunity for accountability to the fans, and specifically mentioning that after a loss he wanted to relay his thoughts and feelings. And him following up by saying he can always tell when seeing clips of his interviews if the Rangers won or lost by his expressions and tone, and how he can’t always tell that watching other players’ interviews.
Just two people who really understand/understood their roles as representatives of the Rangers to the public.
That was a fantastic interview. I really wished it were longer.
