Daily-ish Giants-Focused AFL Quick-Notes 11/13/24 – Bo’s Grand Performance puts Scottsdale on the verge of the Playoffs

Peoria might be the AFL’s far-and-away last place team, but it has more Top 30 prospects than any other squad, and eight of their nine hitters were on MLB Pipeline lists.  The Scorpions, meanwhile, had just four hitters from Top 30 lists, and one pitcher.  It didn’t matter.  If you read the headline, then you already know what Bo Davidson did in this game, as the Scorpions blew by Peoria and are now a win away from the playoffs (I think).

Giants Prospects to Spotlight:

  • RF Bo Davidson: 2-5, 2 R, 5 RBI, 1 3B (1), 1 HR (1) – Well, this was the game that Bo Davidson has been waiting for.  After finally hitting his first double in weeks yesterday, he hit his first triple and home run of the fall, and the home run was a grand slam.  He’s now hitting .293 (17-for-58) and his OPS jumped to .821 thanks to the big extra-base hits and cements a very good fall to give him momentum for 2025.
  • SP Elijah Pleasants: 4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 HBP – In what could be Pleasants’ last game of the fall, it was a good game and his longest outing with four innings.  Although he finishes with a 5.68 ERA through 19.0 innings, having walked six and struck out 20…although he also hit an AFL-high for batters. (Eight other pitchers have three.)
  • RP Marques Johnson: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K – Marques Johnson also likely had his last game with a strong scoreless inning.  In 6.0 innings, he walked six and struck out 11, but has a 6.00 ERA after allowing four earned runs (and eight total), and two home runs.

Other Scottsdale Top Prospect Lines:

  • 1B Josue Briceño (DET, #9 Team): 2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR (10), 2 BB, 1 K
  • LF Jacob Reimer (NYM, #20 Team): 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K
  • 2B Eddinson Paulino (TOR, #18 Team): 2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 SB (1)
  • RP Khristian Curtis (PIT, #27 Team): 3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR

Top Peoria Prospect Lines:

  • CF Andrew Pintar (MIA, #18 Team): 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • DH Ethan Salas (SD, #19 Overall): 0-5, 1 K
  • 3B Brock Wilken (MIL, #7 Team): 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR (4), 2 K
  • LF Jared Sundstrom (SEA, #29 Team): 1-4
  • 2B Juan Baez (MIL, #27 Team): 0-4, 2 K
  • 1B Romeo Sanabria (SD, #23 Team): 2-4, 1 R, 1 K
  • SS Leodalis De Vries (SD, #28 Overall): 0-3
  • RF Luis Lara (MIL, #16 Team): 1-3, 1 R, 1 3B (1), 1 BB, 1 K

Playoff Talk:

Okay, I’m confused.  Today, the AFL Standings say that Scottsdale is eliminated, even though both Glendale and Salt River lost.

With Scottsdale playing Glendale tomorrow, if Scottsdale wins, the Scorpions and Desert Dogs would be tied at 16-14, and the Scorpions hold the head-to-head advantage.

The AFL playoff procedures says that tiebreakers are broken by head-to-head record, so…idk.

Heck, there’s a chance that if Scottsdale wins and Salt River loses, and the Scorpions hold that head-to-head record that it means Scottsdale could be the #2 seed.

Anyways, I’m very certain that the Scorpions can still make the playoffs win a win on Thursday.  If they do, they will play a play-in semifinal with the #2/#3 seed, which will be played at Scottsdale Stadium regardless of who is in it and in what seed.  The winner will face the #1 seed Surprise Saguaros for a Saturday championship game at Salt River Fields.
