This is why we should have kept Raanta. I’ve said this for over a year now, would be a great mentor to Koochie and would have primed Pyotr to being the starter this year. Freddie is too fragile and we knew he’d go down again.
Worst case Raanta could have been our 3rd.
Edit: For all the downvotes (which make no sense) lets look at the stats and lets be favorable to Koochie (who I love tbc) and look at the last three seasons, in which the last was Raanta’s worst given that horrible streak that tanked his stats.
Raanta: 21-22 season: .912 save %, 2.45 GAA 22-23 season: .910 save %, 2.23 GAA 23-24 season: .872 save %, 2.99 GAA
Koochie: 21-22 season: .902 save %, 2.42 GAA 22-23 season: .909 save %, 2.44 GAA 23-24 season: .911 save %, 2.33 GAA
If you take out the one bad streak, that the team admittedly stated the defense was abyssmal, and where Raanta had faced an excessive more shots on goal than Koochie, they are essentially identical statistically.
Also Koochie is our future, him getting starting minutes this year imo is the right choice for him to develop BEFORE Freddy is gone, and Raanta would have been a great 3rd for situations well… like this. Odd we’d prefer Martin over Raanta given his track record with us.
Glad we bagged a ton of points at the beginning of the season, because here comes that slump we were worried about.

Well the good news is that we seriously tighten up the D when we call our AHL tendies up so hopefully we don’t see a collapse in front of Yaniv like we did against the Utah Phoenix Hockey Arizona Coyote Club
Wish I could say I’m surprised but I’m not. It’s like clockwork that the team cannot keep both or 3 goaltenders healthy and I think org needs to start taking the blame for some of that. And I’m sure there will now be posts about bringing back Ned, but like with last season the team has no leverage to trade for another goalie.
