4. If you think Bailey and breslow telling him to throw more off speed is going to help you are mistaken. When Wilson has had success it’s been when he’s throwing his fastball at a high clip. The problem is the spin rate on his fastball has dropped significantly. Even though his fastball velo is still above average and sitting where it always has, it doesn’t have the same ride as it used to when he was having success several seasons ago. The data shows no upward trend in spin rate on fastballs for pitchers coached by Bailey and in a lot of cases shows a relatively substantial downward trend. I do agree that it’s a really good value signing especially considering our need for LHPs but if Bailey and breslow approach him with their same philosophy it’s not going to work out.
