[Discussion] Does arguing help in the end?

  1. I’m genuinely curious about what people think of QBs arguing with refs. Growing up, I remember watching Brady constantly complain to officials, and now we see Mahomes doing the same, with 3 Super Bowl rings to his name. Is there some kind of logic or strategy behind it?

It’s not just in football, either. Michael Jordan used to argue with refs all the time in the NBA, and many considered it part of his competitive edge. A random but relevant example: I had a classmate in high school who would argue with teachers over grades on essays, and more often than not, his grade would improve.

I’m not suggesting that arguing with refs directly leads to championships, but could pushing back on missed or bad calls help influence future officiating? Is there a psychological or strategic advantage to it? What do you think?

  2. That’s how you get refs to love you.

” I won’t talk shit about people who could possibly create drama”

Drama/ chaos creators: ” we like that newer Joe guy” he won’t make us lose our jobs

  3. Normally I’d say don’t complain. But it doesn’t seem to be working for Joe. He’s a superstar and should be protected like a superstar QB

  4. I think building a relationship (not necessarily asking for calls) with them helps a ton, which nobody on our team/staff seems to have done.

  5. I think the elite players see the entire field better than a crew of refs often. The refs being told what’s happening and where to look doesn’t invoke an “I owe him one”, it just gets them to watch where fouls are committed. When Brady knew a receiver was open then not, he knew somehow the receiver was fouled unless he just fell on his own. QBs should know the game better than the refs,, educating them helps them and they see could in both teams, they don’t just look at one side.

Joe has his opinion, I have my opinion. He’s the one making millions. But at the rate this team is playing, the term elite QB will fade with time. The NFL is how many have you won lately.

  6. Serious question. Has there ever been an instance where a ref changes his call because a player complains to him?

  7. Mahomes whined about a player to refs and then they threw flag….it was a game this year. Can’t remember which game but I felt the NFL die a little that day

  8. Refs have to pay attention when someone like him or Mahomes throws their arms up, joes a bit too humble but honestly if you don’t give the ref an indication he missed a call he won’t call it

  9. Joe understands that, in part, his job is political.

He’s always said the right thing.

His thoughts and feelings may be different.

But he says the right thing.

    Joe is a company man.

  10. It works for John Harbough. He complains continuously and I think it wears the refs down over time. Enough to keep the flags in their pocket on that last play.

For Joe, I think he needs to find his own style for that. He never wants to let the defense think they’re getting to him. He takes the hit and gets back up. Complaining to the ref goes against that.

Do it when the defense is out of earshot and with humor so it doesn’t sound like a crybaby. “You know he nearly tore my head off on that play. I’ll live, but that’s a penalty.”
