Finding Some Trade Targets for the Cleveland Guardians: Trade Talk Thursday

Who could the Cleveland Guardians target in trades this off-season to upgrade their rotation with players other teams are looking to trade? And could they take advantage of other teams looking to shed salary for a chance?

On a Trade Talk Thursday edition of Locked On Guardians, we look at a pair of trade the Guardians could make with Arizona, who is getting calls about its starting pitching, and the Cardinals, who are looking to dump salary.

We also discuss the Guardians promoting minor league hitting coordinator Grant Fink to their major League hitting coach.

  1. I will view this offseason as a bust if we don’t sign Juan Soto, Roki, max fried, Matt Boyd, trade for Brent rooker, and trade for Mike trout. Also, we should sign Seymour butts

  2. Helsley,Fedde and Arenado are the 3 most likely to be traded from the Cardinals. Brendan Donavon has played 3rd,2nd and the OF. He would probably fill in just fine at SS as well. I think they would trade him, but they would have to be overwhelmed with an offer…. the fans love him and he's a great clubhouse guy. I'm sure they will field many phone calls on him this off-season. I really like Gaddis and he would be someone I would ask for in a trade for sure. Brito seems to be a contact hitter that's the type of player I'm looking for as a fan. Fedde would be a good pickup for Cleveland's rotation. I believe he is a solid reliable arm. I think the Cardinals should extend him actually. I think a haul of just prospects would get Helsley. I'm not sure Cleveland needs him maybe they do? Arenado is still very much a useful player, but the money he is getting is too much for a player who is about to turn 34. The Cardinals bullpen was solid not great this past year it could use some help.

  3. If I had to guess, after the success he had with Chris Sale last year and potentially losing Max Fried, I could almost guarantee that Alex Anthopoulos is on the horn right now with the Diamondbacks trying to trade loose ends to Arizona for Jordon Montgomery.

  4. Great show again, couple questions if I may. One, what if anything do the “promotions” of Albarnaz and Correa mean. Second, unrelated I know but, any thoughts on the fact that now 2 teams are going to be playing home games at minor league/spring training parks?

  5. Yes, Gaddis has proven himself as a solid reliever with his tested pitch mix. He clearly improved this year in the way he approached and attacked hitters. His current pitch mix might be more suited for relief but what if the Guardians try one more time to stretch him out as a starter? Hear me out, Gaddis is a strong guy (CC'ish), if Willis could help him take another step forward; add another offshoot of a pitch, get a tick more out of his fastball, wouldn't his value as a starter be even greater for this team? Five years of control gives us another year or two to see if Gaddis could become something of even greater value. If it's not working out mid season, you put him back in the pen. But if it does work out, Cleveland is so much the better. Keep him for a few years and then possibly trade him. when arbitration gets too much. Teams would be very interested in a tested start who is even a proven arm out of the pen, even closer material like Smoltz.
