[Andrew Baggarly] The Giants’ hitting philosophy in 2025: More dynamism, fewer strikeouts

  1. I always thought the old regime’s plan to strike out a lot and not get dynamic hits seemed contrary to winning baseball strategy

  2. Meckler mania 2.0. Throw analytics out the window and bring back bunting and the Baltimore chop.

  3. The Mariners tried to reduce strikeouts in 2024. The strikeouts exploded this season instead.

Just acquire good hitters, whether or not they strike out.

  4. Title is a bit misleading since fewer strikeouts is more of a statistic. But I do like what the philosophy is emphasizing – being able to find a way to get the ball into play on two-strike counts. Where as, this past season had too many strikeouts looking.

  5. The Giants have been fairly patient in recent years, often to the point of passively stroking out looking. I wouldn’t even mind if their strikeout numbers remained similar if they were swinging more often (and, of course, their roster added some athletic and fast guys).

If they can add a speedy short stop with a solid glove, and Grant McCray can develop into anything more than a pinch runner/late-game defensive replacement, that would be a great start.

I’m related news, I’m so excited to watch Jung-Hoo Lee. When I think of dynamic at bats, hustle, and not striking out, I think of the 30-something handsome games we were teased with last year. Even if doesn’t become a star, he’s the type of guy they need to set the tone in the lineup. Also, he’s the type of toned that will set the handsome in the hearts of fans

  6. But how are we going to strand all those runners in scoring position if we’re striking out less?

  7. We’re going to have professional hitters this year!!! Aren’t they all professional hitters?

  8. I don’t understand why teams don’t go against the grain. Ever since moneyball became popular, it seems every team is trying to copycat. Namely get players with high obp or homerun hitters where striking out a lot is ok. Since that has been the case, contact hitters salaries have gone down a lot. Wouldn’t it make sense for a team to grab a bunch of those players on the cheap?

  9. Expanding the zone and more practice bunting sounds like a solid plan. I’d rather a batter make weak contact with two strikes than staying with their approach and striking out. Generally baseball has moved to hitters being selective and swinging for power. Doesn’t work at Oracle.

  10. Giants need speed. It’s beyond frustrating that they have completely ignored what should be their main focus
